BEER PONG- EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
Ping Pong is a fun sport, indeed. But, you cannot really call it a party game until something extra is added to that. Well, Beer Pong is one such metamorphosed version of Ping Pong that includes drinking loads and loads of booze alongside playing. If it’s a birthday party that you are planning, or New Year or Christmas is knocking at the door, you can set up a game of Beer Pong and your party would be a super-hit for sure.
Beer Pong : (N) a game of booze drinking where there’s always some strange guy saying “I am way better than this, usually”.
That’s the game of Beer Pong...you don’t play it, you drink it!
So, rule wise, Beer Pong is a drinking game in which players throw their ball across the table with the goal of reaching a cup of the other team’s side. If you hit the cup, the defenders would have to drink the beer in the cup that the ball has landed. Each team keeps taking shots until one of the teams eliminates all the cups in the opponent’s side.
Now, it’s time for the rules.
P.S. Yes, it does have rules!
Requirements
Well, there’s no ITTF imposed rules on it, but Beer Pong does require some basic material for the game to be played. You’d be needing-
An eight-foot long table of rectangular shape
20 cups
2 Ping Pong balls
Beer of your choice, and obviously, players
The Set-Up
Pick a team- A basic Beer Pong game requires 2 teams of 2 persons in each, but it’s no ITTF regulation, and so, you can add as many people as you want in this game. You just need to take turns in the throwing.
Cups Arrangement- 10 cups are arranged on each side of the table in the form of pyramids. Each cup is filled with the desired amount of beer. It’s basically 2 cans of beer that fills up to 10 cups.
Who goes first?- Decision on which team goes first, a player from each team keeps shooting their opponent’s cup until either of the two sides misses or both make it, making eye contact with the opponent through and through. This continues until one makes it and the other doesn’t. Once this is done, the leading team can begin the game.
Gameplay
Once the beginning team is decided, each player from both the sides tries to throw the ball on the opponent’s solo cup. Once one of the scores, the opponent team has to take the ball out, drink the beer in the cup and put the cup aside. Whether the ball can bounce or sink directly on the cup shall be decided by house rules. This goes on until one of the teams are left with no cups on their table. The team still having some cups remaining on the table shall win.
House Rules
Beer Pong is a recreational game, hence, what rules to follow and what not to is solely based on the party planner. There can be a number of additional rules that one can add to make the game even more fun.
Still, there are some basic rules that you must know. Read it all thoroughly to ensure that you don’t look like a complete noob in a house party!
Elbows-
While shooting, your elbows should always stay behind the edge of the table. You can’t simply reach as much as you can to hit the opponent’s cup. Once someone breaks this rule, the point would not be counted. This one, basically, is an unspoken rule, but definitely, an important one.
Re-formation-
While the game is going on, both teams can ask for a re-formation of the cups in the opponent team. Each team is only allowed to ask for this re-formation twice before the beginning of their turn. But, you are not allowed to ask for a re-formation during a redemption round or during rollbacks.
Re-formations can be of various kinds like small pyramid, house, diamond, triangle and stacked.
Swatting and Bounce Shots-
If a player’s ball hits the table before sinking into the cup, two of their cups are removed. One would be the cup that the player reached and another of the defender’s choice. If only two cups are left on the table, this bounce shot shall only remove one of the cups that it sank in. If a bounce shot is made, the defending team can swat away the ball before it sinks in the cup. Swatting is only and only allowed during bounce shots. If swatting is done on a none-bounce shot, the shooting team gets both the balls back and a chance to shoot again.
Fingering and Bowling-
If a shooter has successfully sunk a ball in the cup, but it is still spinning inside the cup, the defending team can try and bring the ball out with one finger. If not that, they can also blow into the cup to take the ball out. Once the ball is settled inside the cup, no blowing or fingering is allowed then.
Explosion-
When both partners sink their balls into the same cup, all the cups surrounding that very cup shall also be removed. This is called explosion! Another variation of explosion is when only 3 cups would be removed, including the cup that the ball sank into.
Rollbacks-
If a player shoots and the ball misses the cup but rolls back towards him, the player can instantly grab the ball and take another shot. This must be a trick shot!
Death Cup-
If the opponent team is still drinking the beer from their last shot, you can try to hit as many cups as possible during that. If you are successful in that, you would automatically win the game and the losing team would have to drink all the beer left on the table. Death cup counts only when the opponent team is holding the beer cup in their hand.
Redemption-
After the very last cup is hit, each player of the losing team is provided with a redemption. Each of them would get a chance to shoot and sink the ball in the winning team’s cups. If they are not not successful in doing so, they lose. If a cup is hit during this round, the losing team’s cup comes back to the table and the game continues. Redemption rounds are only available once for each team.
