Beauty trends that must be left behind
I love a beauty trend just as much as the next girl does, growing up playing with mom’s makeup and trying on her Chanel lipsticks can do that to a person, sorry mummy! The year 2015 came and went with beauty trends that were quite weird, a bit over the top, time consuming and sometimes downright stupid. Trends come and go, it’s an evolving industry and we’re sucked in by its magical existence, yes that might sound a bit snarky but I’ve always heard my mother’s voice in my head as I apply my makeup “always keep it simple and classy to accentuate your own beauty”, I love you mommy! So going back to the trends of 2015, there were many that were actually pretty flattering and should always be kept in that box of beauty tips, others, not so much. Here are some of last year’s trends that need to stay back in 2015.
Grey granny hair, need I say more? A head full of grey hair shouldn’t be a thing, the process in which you go through to get that trendy grey hair is long, brutal on your hair and not to mention the amount of care, retouches and treatments you need to go through to take care of it. Same goes for purple hair, lavender and ... rainbow hair.. yikes! Please don’t channel your inner unicorn, you’re beautiful just the way you are.
Contouring is a beauty tip created to enhance the face’s features. Excessive contouring though, it’s time consuming and unnecessary. The latest trends include clown contouring, dotted contouring, Aztec, henna, scotch taping your face, spoon contouring… Contouring should be simple and easy in order to prevent getting “cake face”. Strobing is also supposed to be an enhancement mechanism, it’s supposed to highlight the areas where the sun would hit, but excessive strobing is like throwing glitter on your whole face, highlighters should be used wisely and makeup artists always recommend light highlighting as well as light contouring. If used excessively, it will show in good light as well as making it unflattering for those who use that technique.

Enhancing your natural pout is nice, might be a bit too nice if you’re over lining your lips. It was a trend in the 90’s and stayed there, so why go ahead and bring it back? Sure bigger lips are prettier but over lining is fake and unnatural. The Kylie Jenner lip challenge, the downright stupid lip enhancing trend is dangerous. The young celebrity had lip fillers but since many can’t afford lip fillers, they went to the next best thing (in their opinion), plumping those lips using soft drink bottles, glasses or just about any tube like object for that fuller lip look.
Every woman loves a good manicure, it’s feminine and sweet. In 2015, stiletto nails were in, also known as Eagle talon nails. Long, sometimes sharp and pointy nails aren’t very feminine, almost feline like even, so it’s understandable that it’s a trend most likely to be left behind in 2015. Not only is it a sharp trend, it would be difficult to go through everyday errands using talons as nails, so please ladies, keep it clean and simple.
Whoever said that “skinny is in” surely is underestimating the extremity of their words. Healthy is always in, skinny not so much. Beauty isn’t confined to any shape or size, it’s universal. This next beauty trend isn’t only absurd; it also falls under the dangerous category, waist trainers. In the Victorian age, corsets were used to minimize the shape of women’s hips in order to woo men, in the intention of a marriage proposal; it was dangerous then and dangerous now. Celebrities like the Kardashian sisters endorse the waist crinching concoction claiming it helps shrink the waist; doctors on the other hand do not recommend it. It obstructs the airways causing some to faint, pushes in organs and no matter how long you wear them, you will not have a tiny waist as a result. Your answer to this dilemma lies in one simple word: the gym.
Another trend to leave behind, flash tattoos. They’re unnecessary, don’t add anything to any outfit and are only fancy in the summer whilst donning a beautiful tan.
This one too, septum piercing. Please ladies leave this trend alone and keep it in 2015. One word that comes to mind describing this trend and please don’t hate: ouch!
Men, this goes for you too, man buns are not flattering! Man buns shouldn’t be in the same sentence, man buns are temporary, might look cool, but I mean come on, do you really want to wait a whole year to grow your hair just so you can close shave the bottom part of your head and have longer hair on top for a bun? I think most men and women agree that a classical clean cut is classy and flattering, a man bun is neither, sorry not sorry.
Ladies, we’re a month in 2016, please keep it simple and classy and leave all the extremes behind. Beauty is not superficial, makeup isn’t either, we all love it just don’t abuse it.
