Bow Safety.

One of the biggest risks in archery is getting shot by a stray arrow or an arrow breaking on the string when taking a shot.

Never shoot an arrow if there is anyone in front or close to the front of your bow.

Always obey archery club rules. (A Bow is a Dangerous Weapon)

Always check the following after every single round of shots:

·         The field point is firmly attached to the arrow shaft.

·         The nock and fletching’s intact and firmly attached.

·         The arrow shaft shows no sign of cracking or splintering.

·         The arrow shaft isclean and dry: dirt causes accuracy changes and water lubricates.

·         Always check arrows before using them again.

During a shot the arrow flexes while the bowstring exerts a large force on it, if it breaks the bow can push the back half of the arrow shaft through your bow hand or send it flying at your friends.

Make sure you have the correct spine arrows for your bows draw weight.

Flex your arrows before using them for the next round, especially carbon arrows.

Arrows have wooden, aluminiumor carbon fibre shafts.

Carbon fibre is tough but has a reputation for shattering into nasty splinters when it does break.Wood tends to break into sharp points. Aluminium arrows bend and show damage easily while not breaking.

Check bow limbs regularly for nicks, cracks and twisting.

Never "dry fire" a bow…….drawing and releasing without an arrow on the string.

The kinetic energy released doesn’t leave with the arrow it goes back into the limbs and cams which damages the bow or the string and in some cases the archer as well.

This couldhappen by accident if the arrow nock breaks when you shoot or if it falls off the string at the wrong moment. Therefore it should be in good condition and should grip the string adequately.

Check bow strings for cuts and general fraying.

Bow strings last longer when maintained by rubbing them regularly with string wax.

I’d say about every second time you have a shooting session.

You might want a wrist protector to protect the inside of the forearm of your bow hand from the bow string, this help greatly until you achieve your proper bow shooting form.

If you draw with your fingers ("Mediterranean" style), you can protect them from the bow string with a tab or a three-fingered shooting glove.

If you shoot using a release aid or trigger make sure your D-loop position is correct and check often for damage. This can also be waxed with the string wax.

All the above are common items available from your local archery pro shop.
