Apple Closes the Deal and Obtains the Rights of the Film “Cherry”
Apple
is slowly but surely raising the ante for Apple TV+ in its stride to challenge
the dominance of Netflix and HBO. It has now added Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo
starrer “Cherry ” in its collection.
If the word of a very reliable
Deadline is to be believed, the deal was struck with an agreed transaction of
$40 million. The upcoming crime drama is the first film that Russo brothers
(Joe and Anthony Russo) have made since their massive success with Marvel
Cinematic Universe and especially with their euphoria with Avengers: Infinity
War and Avengers: Endgame. The film will be an adaptation of a novel penned by
Nico Walker.
The Russo brothers had reportedly
agreed to a $1 million deal to make the film adaptation of Walker’s book. It is
a golden deal for Apple as it would look to enhance its quality storage, get a
revenue surplus and a possible forthcoming Academy Award nominee will have an
Apple’s name attached to it. Apple has shown tenacity ever since Netflix’s
Irishman bagged a nomination in the Best Picture category at 2020 Academy
Awards.
Deadline has also come to know
that Apple’s Worldwide Video Executives Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg are
currently in the hunt for new movies that can massively enhance their
subscribers should they get added in Apple TV+ library. Recent inclusion looks
promising with the likes of “Greyhound,” “Cherry,” Will Smith starrer
“Emancipation,” and Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio starrer “Killers of
the Flower Moon.”
Netflix is one step ahead of them
as it has already obtained the ownership of Toronto and Venice International
Film Festival’s fa’ “Bruised” (Halle Berry’s first directorial venture),
“Pieces of a Woman,” and John David Washington and Zendaya starrer “Malcolm
& Marie.”
For “Malcolm & Marie,” Netflix
had defeated the likes of Apple, Searchlight, Amazon, A24, Focus Features, and
HBO.
The streaming giant also has the
likes of Devil All the Time, Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy, and David Fincher’s
Mank to represent itself at the Oscars. The general opinion in the market says
that while HBO had an edge in Primetime Emmy Awards, Netflix will surely be
favorites at the 2021 Academy Awards as several theater films have also been
delayed.
Joseph and Anthony Russo are now
headed towards independent films after having established an impregnable legacy
with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as the two films have
recently attained the pedigree of being the highest-grossing film of all time.
Avengers: Endgame currently holds the number 1 spot after sailing past the likes
of Titanic, Avatar, and Avengers Infinity War.
