On this blog, we are sharing information related to the MOT test which will help you in taking appropriate action at the right time. Although this is a rare case, if you are not satisfied with the MOT result, there are rules set out by the DVSA for objecting to it.

There is a certain procedure and terms and conditions, a fixed period when the authorities are ready to accept the appeal and take action against it. This is a special topic on which we have set out details according to several subtopics. Along with this, we have also guided you at the end of this page on how to get MOT Reminder Service simply.

Does MOT Test Provide Unquestionable Details of Vehicle’ Mileage?

Many people also think that MOT check also provides indisputable data on vehicle mileage, we would like to tell you this is just a misconception.

Although it is a different matter that the mileage is recorded during testing, no component that is mandatory for inspection requires the MOT center to confirm that their reported mileage is accurate and no questions can be raised on it.

Such procedures are merely notes which will not be found as part of an MOT check.

One Who Wants to Appeal Against MOT Checkings

Any motorist who has taken an MOT test, as in my case, has the right to appeal against it if they do not agree with the outcome of the test. For this, you will have to follow some terms and conditions only then this will be possible.

The first appeal you might want to make to the center manager and after that if you feel you have not received a good enough response, the next steps are as follows:

If the reason for objecting relates to mechanical items, you must appeal to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency within 28 days of the original test.

However, if the suspected case is for corrosion (except brake line, brake disc, or exhaust system) you are allowed three months instead of 28 days.

In What Cases Can the Appeal Be Accepted?

Remember, the mileage you get after the test or its lacking, has no importance to the matter of appeal, even if you do not drive your vehicle for several months after the test.

If any of the items in objection are repaired, uninstalled, or replaced from the vehicle, the appeal will be rejected or canceled by the authorities. Therefore, keep in mind that you do not do this otherwise you may face its consequences.

If the reason for your MOT failure is items that can be easily replaced such as the windscreen, wiper blades, or tyres, appealing regarding these will not be acceptable. This is because there is no evidence that these are the same items that were inspected during the test.

If any defect is found in your vehicle even after a long time of testing, then the MOT station will not be responsible at all for this because with time some problems may occur. The complete appeal process is given on the VT20 certificate (for a passing result) and VT30 certificate (for a failing result).

How Much Do We Have to Face for Appellate Inspection?

If the basis of your appeal is against the MOT pass result, no fee will be charged. Conversely, if the reason for objection is about an MOT failure, you will be charged a higher fee which will be the same price as booking the original MOT test. These charges are later refunded if the outcome of the appealing inspection is in favor of the vehicle owner.

If the appeal outcome shows that the vehicle was not correctly diagnosed then appropriate action will be taken against the MOT centre as per law.

What About Compensation If Your Appeal Is Found Appropriate?

DVSA is given the power to discipline MOT stations that carry out such incorrect inspections. So here you need to understand that you cannot ask for any kind of compensation if your complaint is found right as there is no such rule. This responsibility comes under Trading Standards that have completely different procedures.
