Using Agile project management, projects are worked on in a very methodical way separated into smaller, individual steps, each of which must be planned and finished before the next stage is decided, then planned and completed. Each of the steps in an agile management project are referred to as iterations.

Many projects are carried out in a traditional way with a project manager who commands and directs a team of workers towards completion of the project. With Agile project management though, the method is completely different as it places a great deal more responsibility and focus on the whole team. The whole team have the opportunity to contribute their input to the project throughout the entire process.

The project manager looks at the key requirements and then looks for an appropriate solution and goal to be achieved in order to complete the project successfully. The role of the manager is to take the project and their vision of its solution and come up with a plan to work towards their vision of the end goal.

From this point onwards, the project is tackled by all of the team incrementally in minor stages so that each increment that is completed builds upon the previous one. With agile, the working process is very flexible, because the team plan and complete each new stage, using the information and knowledge gained whilst working on the previous stages.

This flexible attitude means that plans are altered to meet the needs of the project as it develops. This flexibility becomes particularly crucial when teams are working on long term projects which span several years, as circumstances are far more subject to change. There is always a possibility that the original solution and goals could lose relevance and therefore need to be altered in some way.

During each stage of the process, when challenges arise, the team club together to find the best way to overcome and work around them, so that the project can be effectively completed.

This approach is incredibly effective at pinpointing issues in the development stage and dealing with them immediately through implementing change. It is important for issues to be recognised and dealt with immediately as opposed to later when the project has been completed.

Agile is just as effective when used with smaller scale projects and it is frequently used in information technology programs. It is a very effective method for working through projects that are of such a complicated nature it is not possible to map them out accurately.
