What is functional testing? 

It is a testing method that checks whether the system’s functionality is able to meet the requirements as per the expectations. It makes sure that the software is behaving as expected so that individual features can be tested through various approaches like system testing, integration tests and unit tests. The core functionality is verified through both automated and manual testing methods.  

Functional testing helps make sure that the overall software quality is improved, the chances of defects are reduced and the software is performing as expected before its release. 

 

The following are the key factors that are tested by the functional testing method in order to deliver bug-free software: 

  1. Testing API functionalities: Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are tested in applications to know whether they are interacting with other systems as per the expectations or not. This in turn makes sure that there is a proper integration and data exchange between external and software systems.  

 

  1. System’s behavior in scenarios and different inputs: The system’s behavior is examined under user interactions and varied conditions by going beyond functional testing. This may include: 

  • Edge cases: The team should know how extremely big datasets are handled by the system 

 

  • Testing error handling: The team should come up with a solution when invalid data is entered by a user 

 

  • Varied user workflows: When a specific series of actions are followed by a user then the software should work as per the required expectations. 

 

  1. Analyzing business logic: Core functions, data processing and calculations should be tested for properly carrying out the activities. This might involve: 

  • Filtering algorithms and data sorting  

  • Mathematical calculations are tested within the software 

  •  Implementation of business rules in the application. 

 

  1. Examining UI elements: Forms, menus, buttons and other components are tested for responsiveness and proper functionality. Following are a few key points that can be verified: 

  • All options should be correctly displayed by menus 

  • Buttons are working as per the expectations 

  • User input is validated by forms. 

 

Conclusion: Functional testing is an important aspect of software testing. Hence, the testing team should know how best to leverage functional testing methods, techniques and tools, based on the project they are working on.
