IPL 2025 Retention Rules

Before we get ahead of ourselves and go over the IPL 2025 Retention list, we first need to know what the rules and regulations for retention are. Find all the details below.

Each IPL team is allowed a maximum of 6 retentions, which can be a maximum of 5 capped players and 2 uncapped players. The retention of both capped and uncapped players must not exceed 6 retentions.

There is no limit for the retention of overseas or Indian players; one can retain as many as all the 6 overseas or Indian players. The retention of 5 capped players costs 75 crores, while one uncapped player further costs 4 crores.

Now, comes the minimum amount set for each retention slot: 1st retention: 18 crores, 2nd retention: 14 crores, 3rd retention: 11 crores, 4th retention: 18 crores, 5th retention: 14 crores, uncapped player: 4 crores.

Now, for every vacant retention slot, an IPL franchise will be given an RTM card; for instance, if a team retains no one, then that team will have 6 RTM cards and vice-versa.

The IPL 2025 Mega Auction has increased the total purse of the team up to 120 crores. A player who has no central contract or has not played for Team India in the last 5 years can be retained as an uncapped player.
