Alberta Province in Canada has changed the mode of submission of Expression of Interest /EOI for some of the pathways under its Alberta Advantage Immigration Program. Effective from 30 September 2024, candidates seeking to file an application for any of the Worker Streams have to submit a Worker EOI.

The Worker EOI has to be submitted through the AAIP portal. These candidates will be then entered into a pool in Worker Stream for consideration. There is no application fee.

Eligible candidates will be offered a ranking as per the Worker EOI point’s grid and this is quite similar to the CRS score calculator for Canada. The allocation of points is based on human capital factors. These include their educational credentials, age, language proficiency, work experience, and presence of familial ties to Alberta.

Candidates in the Worker EOI pool having higher scores have good prospects of receiving a Nomination under AAIP. The Invitations from AAIP are shared via email.

Further, those candidates who have a current Worker EOI or active or draft AAIP application or Entrepreneur EOI cannot create a Worker EOI. Current EOIs or applications have to be withdrawn before creating a new Worker EOI.

Alberta has said that candidates must not hurriedly file an application as section draws under worker streams will be conducted by the end of October 2024.

AAIP Worker Streams

Previously this year, AAIP altered the mode of acceptance of applications for worker streams to improve the management of spiraling demand fulfilling priorities of the labor market.

AAIP announced in June that it would accept only a specific number of applications into the pool of applications at a given time. If the target was achieved by the deadline, an application would not be accepted anymore.

The objective was to improve processing times and better allocation of 9,750 nominations that Alberta received from IRCC for 2024. The pathways impacted include:

  • Alberta Opportunity Stream
  • Accelerated Tech Pathway
  • Rural Renewal Stream
  • Tourism and Hospitality Stream

The strategy aimed to offer applicants multiple opportunities to file an application and access the AAIP throughout the year.

For instance, AOS has witnessed huge demand this year. As a result, AAIP had paused accepting applications for AOS from February to June this year.

AAIP announced that pausing applications was essential to enable it to address the existing inventory and prioritize nominations for skills shortages in various sectors. These include Technology, Healthcare, Construction, Agriculture, Hospitality, Tourism, and other in-demand sectors.

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program

AAIP is the economic immigration program of Alberta Province through which it nominates candidates for Permanent Residence Visas. Nominees must be adequately skilled to cater to job openings or plan to start or buy a business in the province. They must also be capable of taking care of their families.

AAIP is managed by the Provincial Government of Alberta and the Federal Government in Canada. Those who receive the nomination can apply for a PR Visa including their spouse and dependent kids. The final decision on the applications is taken by the Federal Government.

The PR Visa applications are managed by the IRCC - Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Application Process

Step 1

Choose the accurate AAIP stream based on your unique situation and confirm your eligibility for the stream.

Step 2

File your application for the selected stream.

Step 3

Obtain PR Visa nomination from AAIP.

Step 4

File PR Visa application supported by the nomination with IRCC. Make a payment of the Canada PR application fee.

You must know that there are two types of immigration streams under AAIP – Enhanced PNP and Base PNP streams.

Enhanced Streams are linked with the IRCC’s Express Entry System. In AAIP only one immigration category is enhanced – the Alberta Express Entry system. Candidates with a profile in Express Entry have to first file an EOI after creating a profile in the Express Entry system.

Eligible candidates can get a Notification of Interest from AAIP. They must file an application for a Provincial Nomination with AAIP in 14 days. If successful they must apply for PR Visa with IRCC.
