6 Easy Steps to Install a Gooseneck Hitch
Gooseneck hitches are used when towing heavy loads. They can tow weights of up to 30 pounds. A gooseneck hitch handles superbly when towing heavy loads. They are usually mounted inside the truck bed unlike other standard ball hitches. There should be one hole drilled during installation but most drivers prefer to perform alterations when towing large loads. Gooseneck hitches can be installed in 6 simple steps.
In order to install, you will need, a cordless drill, a flat file, a hole saw, a socket set, a ratchet, a hammer and a drill bit set.
1. Where you intend to finally mount the hitch ball, mark its center inside the truck bed. The ball will have to be at the center of bed rails and in front of the rear axle of the vehicle. You should make sure that when placed, the ball does not interfere with the gooseneck when turning. To attain this, do some measurements. It’s important also to make sure that the drilling location does not interfere with the components found under the truck bed.
2. Next use a 3.5 inch hole saw to saw through the truck bed at the marking point. To remove any rough edges created, file the holes edges.
3. From under the truck, the gooseneck hitch platform should be placed into the hole. The platform becomes a template when drilling required holes during installation of the u bolts, carriage bolts and the hex bolts. Use the 5/8 inch drill bit and the cordless drill to drill holes through the platform. For installation of u bolts, drill ¾ inch holes at each location.
4. The platform has a pattern that should be used with the carriage bolts and the hex bolts. Slide them from the beds top through the hitch platform. A nut and a lock washer can then be used to secure the bolts from under the truck bed. The bolts should be torqued to 150 foot pounds.
5. The two u bolts available in the installation kit should be slid into the ¾ inch holes. This should be done from the top bed’s top side. Use the nut and lock washer to secure the assembly. This should be done after a spring has been slipped on each of the u bolts extensions. The nuts should be tightened until the threads can be seen from below the nut.
6. The ball hitch screw should then be unscrewed from the gooseneck ball hitch top. From the trucks top side, through the platform of the hitch, slide the ball. Re tighten the screws of the ball hitch that are on top of the ball making sure they are completely tight and secure.
These easy steps will aid you in installing the hitches. Make sure to tighten the hitches properly to avoid loosening. The gooseneck hitch will now aid you in towing any heavy loads. Remember that hitches correctly installed will make sure you avoid accidents. If not sure about the measurements, you can have a mechanic install it for you. Be sure to be safe on the road when towing.
