5 Things Every Women Rider Needs To Know For Safety
Two-wheeler road trips are amazing, but if you are a female, you might be worried about your safety. If that is stopping you from following your heart and making your dream of going on a motorcycle trip, then we have some practical tips that will help you prepare better and stay safe on both group rides and solo rides.
- Stay visible at all times: Staying visible is important not just when you are on the road. It is more important to stay visible when you have ended the ride and are off the road. This is crucial not just for female riders but also for male riders especially when you're riding solo. Localities can easily identify an outsider and take the opportunity to dupe you out of your money. Communicate with local people to get a glimpse of their lifestyle and life in general, but always be on guard and be visible to other people when you are doing that. Pickpocketing and theft are common when riders leave their motorcycles and wander away.
- Always have someone know where you are: Again, this tip is for both male and female solo riders, but if you are a female have someone at home (or someone you trust) know your location even when you are riding in a group or riding with friends. This serves two purposes. First, people who care about you will have peace of mind, and second if you ever get into trouble they will know your last location and it will become easier for them to locate you. It would be naive not to be mentally prepared for emergency situations. When someone knows your whereabouts, it gives you a better chance at getting help sooner than later.
- Never miss out on riding safety gear: While it is always a good idea to have someone come to your rescue, it might not be immediately possible, especially if you are far away from home. In such situations the only thing that keeps you protected is your riding safety gears. Always have a high-quality branded motorcycle helmet with you. If you are a female rider, don’t use someone else’s (husband, father or brother!) helmet, instead purchase a good quality ladies helmet. Besides that, you must also have branded motorcycle riding gloves and boots which are very essential for preventing injuries to your palms and feet.
- Carry a little extra petrol with you: Never plan a ride without first calculating the mileage of your motorcycle. Ride economically and have enough petrol in your tank at all times. However, having said that you cannot predict how far the next petrol pump will be when you are riding through unknown highways. That is why it is always a good idea to have 2-3 liters of petrol in a jerry can with you at all times. Make sure to secure the can safely on your bike and keep it away from exposed fire. This will keep rolling even if you can’t find a petrol pump when your tank becomes empty. As a side note, when you are a petrol station, pour the petrol in the can into your bike, and refill the can with fresh petrol. Also, it is important to note that carrying extra petrol may not be allowed at certain places and the petrol pump may refuse to give you petrol in a can. Speak to them and explain your situation. In most cases, they will understand and help you out.
- Get a dual-sim mobile phone and a power bank: The importance of staying connected on the road cannot be stressed enough. Mobile phone connectivity is not as good in rural areas as it is in cities and some mobile carriers work better than others. To give yourself a better chance at staying connected, always have a dual-sim mobile phone and have two different SIM cards of the most popular carrier in your state. Also, you must have a power bank in your bike luggage bag so that you can recharge the phone when you do not have a power outlet near you. Mobile phones are also useful for their in-built GPS capabilities which will help you find the right direction on the highways.
