5 Hostel Snacks That are as Good Enough as Maggie
Hostel life has its own perks and disadvantages. One common pain that most hostellers share is having no access to tasty and healthy food. The food prepared in the canteen is no match to the home-cooked food made by Mom. I know the feeling of eating ‘maa ke hath ka khana’ after surviving with the hostel food for a couple of months. Living away from home is quite challenging. Though, Maggie has always been my constant saviour. At times, consuming noodles on a regular basis become monotonous too. And eating on outside food joints puts a stain on pockets. During my hostel life, I have discovered some interesting snacks that managed to kill my midnight hunger pangs. For a hosteler who is looking for something delectable than Maggie, here are five must-try snacks:
Aloo Bhujia Sandwich:
You might have tried onion- tomato or plain butter sandwich. Ever thought of making an aloo bhujia sandwich? The idea may sound totally crazy. Buy a pack of chips. Put the tasty bhujia between two bread slices and here you go. If you are fond of tomato ketchup, add it as well. Otherwise, go with a packet green chutney and relish the light snack.
Biscuit Cake:
Cake and biscuit are a rare combination. Before the innovation of jam biscuits into the market, hostelers depended on biscuit cake largely. Yes, you read it right. For jam lovers, this special cake is must to have. Here’s how to make it. Simply spread the mixed jam between two salty biscuits. If you are not a sweet tooth, use cheese slices instead. Tempting, enough?
Nutella Idlis:
Eating idlis every day as main courses can be annoying. Students living in South India have invented an interesting way of savouring them. Dip the soft idlis in a jar of Nutella and prepare a mouth-watering dish within a matter of seconds. Here’s a little secret. Back in school, I used to pack the idlis in my tiffin and carry them to my hostel room. Then I would open a big Nutella jar and make the idlis the way I like it. Many of my mates started liking my this new version of idlis. They preferred mayonnaise over the regular coconut chutneys.
Peanut Masala:
Imagine, you woke up late one morning and the mess is already closed. So, what would you do? Here’s an idea. Buy a packet of peanuts and mix vegetables such as chillies, tomatoes, onions in it. Add salt or lemon juice to the mixture and eat it with white bread.
Cerelac:
This may sound crazy but cerelac is not only healthy but also delicious. I have heard many hostelers picking their favourite flavours and consuming cerelac at dinner.
