I am writing to tell you that my father, Mr. Gregory Chike Agha has passed on. He died on the night of 21st April, 2011, at about 8.20 pm. He was aged 77 years.

He left me and five other children and my mother, his wife of 44 years.

His burial and other funeral ceremonies will come up in due course; maybe in June 2011. We are still talking and building consensus on the date since all interests have to be taken into account.

You might be wondering why we will take so long to bury him. Well, funeral among the Igbos of Eastern Nigeria is not a child's play. If you have read "Things Fall Apart", the funeral described in the book is what generally happens during the burial of important persons and my father, Ezeanata, is (sorry, was(it will take time to get used to it)) an important person.

He was a member of our Traditional Ruler's Cabinet.

We are already missing him.

May his soul rest in peace.

Ezeanata, jee nke oma. (Ezeanata, safe journey).

Note please: I will find time to tell you what happens during our funerals and what will happen during my late father's funeral. At least two hefty cows will be slaughtered among other things. More later.

@Mohann I understand your religious views on cows. Slaughter of cows in my own case has no religious undertone. We use cows because of the quantity of meat we can get from it and nothing else. Of course, we can also (and we may) slaughter goats, rams and also fowls in addition to the cows. They are just to provide meat for the people.

It is not our custom to kill cows other than for meat. However, it will be bad of us to ask people to come and we cannot provide food(including meat) and drinks

@ Joseph Thanks for your kind words. It is always a loss to lose someone close to you even if you know they are dying. I spoke with my father on the phone (he called me) a few hours before he had the stroke that led to his death three days later on Thursday.

He was sharing his plans for Friday (good Friday) with me. He passed on on Thursday night.

I may have to go with the laptop because I hope to spend a few days at home after the funeral. I do not want to be cut off from the world for a

Bron, I am sorry to hear about the sad demise. I lost my father in 2006 when he was 87. Being a Hindu, I cannot accept slaughter of cows. However, that being your custom, I understand. I am curious to know why it takes so much time to bury. May the Almighty give you strength and support. Parents are like an umbrella for children, howsoever old we may be.
