According to Hindu mythology, all the places where Lord Shiva manifested are famous in the name of Jyothirlinga. There are 12 places all over India, where Lord Shiva manifested himself in an intelligent form and fulfilled the desires of his devotees and blessed him to stay in that place in the form of Shivaling forever. Although there are many places of pilgrimage in entire India, but the presence of char Dham and 12 Jyotirlinga with the highest religious significance is of paramount importance. All these 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva are famous all over the world with their miracles, all the suffering and pain goes away only by the philosophy of Jyotirlinga. Here we are giving you information about all these Jyotirlingas in brief.
1. Somnath Jyotirling :-
Somnath Jyotirlinga is called the first Jyotirling In all 12 Jyotirlinges of Lord Shiva. This temple is located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat state. Built on the seaside, this temple has been the favorite place for pilgrims. Behind this temple, it is believed that Chandra had Chanting of Maha mritunjay Mantra of Lord Shiva at this place, when he was suffering from the curse of Prajapati king Daksha. Lord Shiva pleased with Chandra's penance and freed them from the curse and promised to stay himself in this place in the form of Shivaling for eternity.
2. Mallikarjun Jyotirling :-
This Jyotirling of Lord Shiva is situated on the bank of Krishna River in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. It is also known as South Kailash. According to religious beliefs, worshiping the Lord Shiva with philosophy of this Jyotirling receives virtue similar to Ashwamegh Yagya. Moksha is attained by the philosophy of this Jyotirling of Lord Shiva.
3. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling :-
Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on the banks of the river shipra in Ujjain of Madhya Pradesh. This is the only Jyotirling of Lord Shiva whose face is in the south direction. This temple is famous for its Bhasam Aarti, all over the world. It is believed that by sighting this Bhasam Arati, a person is never a victim of premature death. It is particularly fruitful to worship Lord Shiva by coming here for the great tribulation in life and the erosion of kalsarp dosh in the horoscope.
4. Omkareshwar Jyotirling :-
This Jyotirling of Lord Shiva is located on an island between the famous river of Narmada near Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The place is in the shaped of word Om (ॐ ) in itself. For this reason it has been called Omkareshwar Jyotirling. In this temple, there are 2 different Shivling of Lord Shiva known as Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. In which Omkareshwar is considered as swayam bhoo.
5. Kedarnath Jyotirling :-
Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, situated in the mountain ranges of the Uttaranchal state, Lord Shiva loves just like Kailash. This place is located 150 miles away from Haridwar on the banks of Mandakini river. Surrounded by mountains around this temple, this temple is open for 6 months only in the year. In the remaining 6 months it is covered with snow completely. Kedar Nath Temple is also found in Skanda Purana and Shiv Purana. This unique temple, situated in the lap of nature, has become the center of attraction for the people due to its environment and beauty.
6.Bhimashankar Jyotirling :-
Known as Moteshwar Mahadev, this Jyotirlinga is located on Sahyadri Mountain along the banks of the river Bhima in Pune district of Maharashtra. At this place, Lord Shiva had slaughtered Bhimasur, a monster. It is believed that the devotee who sees this Jyothirling every day after sunrise every morning in this temple, the sins of all previous of his lives are destroyed and salvation is attained.
7. Kashi Vishvanath Jyotirling :-
This Jyotirling of Lord Shiva situated in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district is famous for its attainment of liberation. Kashi has been called Lord Shiva's most beloved city. Kashi, Varanasi are the most important of all religions in India. Kashi has been considered as the holiest place for religious reasons. It is believed that in the ears of the person who sacrificed his life in Kashi, Mahadev came and recited the Tarak Mantra, which gives salvation to the person, who becomes free from the sins of birth and birth.
8. Triyambhkeshwar Jyotirling :-
Triyambhkeshwar Jyotirlinga is situated near the Brahmagiri mountain in the Nashik district of Maharashtra and on the banks of the Godavari river. This place is considered as the origin of Godavari. The story of Rishi Gautam and Godavari river is attached in reference to this Jyothirlinga.
9. Vaidyanath Jyotirling :-
Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga is located in Devgarh city of Jharkhand state. In this context, a mythical story related to penance of Lankapati Ravan is popular. Ravana pleased Lord Shiva with his harsh austerities and got Shivaling in boon which he was taking to Lanka. But by the grace of Lord Shiva, this Shivling took place at Vaidyanath place. Vaidyanath place is also known as Vaidyanatha Dham.
10. Nageshwar Jyotirling :-
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is located in Gujarat, 12 to 13 miles from Dwarka in Isshakon. According to Scriptures, Lord Shiva is the God of the Nags (Snakes). Nageshwar means the same: God of the serpent. With complete reverence and faith, the vision of this Jyotirlinga fulfills all the desires.
11. Rameshwaram Jyotirling :-
Sri Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is located in Ramnad district of Tamil Nadu. Here Lord Rama had worshiped his adorable God, Lord Shiva after attaining victory over Lanka. Rameswaram Jyotirlinga is the only Jyotirling which has been calculated in the Char Dham also. Due to being established by Lord Rama, this Shivalinga has been named as Rameswaram. This Jyothirlinga is also known as Ramalingeshwar.
12. Ghrishneshwar Jyotirling : –
Ghrishneshwar Jyotirling is located at the town of Daulatabad near Aurangabad city of Maharashtra. It is the last jyotirlinga in the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Spiritual peace is attained by appearing in this Jyothirlinga and spending some time here. The famous caves of Ellora built by Buddhist monks are located near this temple.
