Mistakes people make in the pursuit of success on the internet
Internet marketing is a business and should be treated as such, all too often we threat it like a hobby or even a pastime. This is a big mistake, if you are working a normal business would you treat it the same? No of course not. So why do we continue to treat our online business the why we do? Here are a few points to ponder:
1: Because we work from home.
2: We put too may eggs in the one basket.
3: It is very easy to not pay as much attention to it.
4: We let our focus lapse.
Because we work from home
We seem to think that because we work from home, we do not need to be as tough on ourselves as we would in any other type of business. We do not keep regular business hours and often burn the midnight oil more than we should do. This in turn causes fatigue an a loss of concentration, leading to poor productivity. However this behaviour can be changed for the better. First of all we should all set a schedule for each day and stick to it rigidly, no ifs. buts, or whys. We have to instil in ourselves a passion for attaining our goals and ambitions.
We put too may eggs in the one basket.
The next very common mistake we all make, it to put too many eggs in one basket. We seem to treat our online business like a department store with many branches. We are not running a department store so stop doing it. What I mean by this is: We get carried away with collecting so many free things, ebooks, programs and other pieces of junk. The biggest problem with this because it is free that’s about what they are worth as well. You do not do yourself any favours collecting them.
The other thing I would like to point out is this. Internet marking is an exacting science and must never be taken for granted. A lot of people join dozens of other sites, communities, social bookmarking sites and the like. I call this the department store mentality, ok I know a lot of people will disagree and that’s ok as well, but I do know what I am talking about. Ask yourself how many staff you need to run a successful department store? How may staff do you have? See where I am heading.
By spreading yourself so thin what hope to you have of attending to all the departments? None. I have always been of the opinion that if you have one thing that is working, why try to fix what isn’t broken. It makes no sense at all. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against communities and the like, there is a place for them. However I see them as a distraction.
It is very easy to not pay as much attention to it.
It all to easy to just let thing slide, saying tomorrow I this or that, when we have today to put things right. Because we work from home, we do not put the same demands on ourselves that we would in an offline business. There too many distractions at home so we must remain very diligent in what we do. Set ourselves an working schedule a time table, would we be open 24/7 in an offline business? Of course we would not.
Each one of use must have office hours and stick to them, what fun is there in all work and no play? Correct we go stale on it very quickly.
We let our focus lapse.
The last point I want to make is this, which round the whole thing off nicely. We are very prone to losing focus, not having our minds on what we are doing. This of course is what happens when we spread ourselves to thin as in the department store mentality. If we lose focus on what we are doing then we may as well close the doors on out business. This ties in with setting goals and making sure we hit them, without focus we do not have a chance to hit our goals. What happens in the end? Yes you guessed it right. We go down the tubes.
