North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole introduced a bill Wednesday that would require federal regulators to limit public exposure to drinking water polluted by trichloroethylene, which has been linked to various forms of cancer.

The chemical, called TCE, was found in water consumed by thousands of military families and employees at Camp Lejeune before wells were shut down two decades ago. Studies have linked TCE to leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and birth defects, among other serious illnesses.
The bill would require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to establish standards limiting TCE levels in drinking water and vapor. TCE - which is used in degreasers, adhesives, paint and spot removers - is classified by the EPA as the most widespread chemical water contaminant in the country, Dole said.
"Drinking water contaminated with TCE can lead to serious health problems and even terminal illness for those exposed, particularly babies in utero, infants and children," Dole said in a written statement. "We can and must take the necessary steps to protect people and avoid senseless tragedies."
Along with Dole, a Republican, the bill was introduced in the Senate by four Democratic senators: presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Barbara Boxer of California, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and John Kerry of Massachusetts.
Drinking water wells contaminated with TCE were closed at Camp Lejeune between 1985 and 1987. Hundreds of thousands of people who lived or worked at the coastal military base could have been exposed to the water, according to government estimates.
Dole has already called on the military to directly inform people who lived and worked at Camp Lejeune that they may have been exposed to chemicals.
