Being told that your services are no longer needed is what almost all workers dread. When this happens, the initial reaction usually is to ask why and to express anger and disappointment. This is, however, not the ideal way you should deal with your termination. Do you know that it is possible for you to exit the way that can still be favorable to you?

Tips for Leaving Your Job On Your Own Terms

1. Be willing to stay until they have found a replacement.

No employer enjoys having to undergo the process of hiring an employee. This is one of their biggest concerns whenever someone submits their resignation letter. Be generous enough to offer your services until such time that they find a replacement. Your boss will appreciate it more if you could prepare a simple training manual that the new employee can use so that his or learning process will be shorter and faster.

2. Inquire about more compensation.

If you are to be laid off because of the reorganization happening in the company, you can ask for some extra compensation. Employees don’t receive the same compensation packages when they are laid off. Perhaps your years in the company are longer than everyone else, which could mean you deserve additional compensation.

3. Request for a letter of recommendation or reference.

It is good to ask for a recommendation letter from your current employer, but this may not be valuable enough for your prospective employers. What you can ask for instead is a letter of reference, in which your current boss is likely to indicate only good things about you.

4. In case you are about to get fired, you should ask to resign instead.

Getting fired by your previous employer is not something that will impress your future employer. If you want to keep your employment record flawless, you should ask your employer to accept your resignation instead of them firing you. In most cases, employers don’t mind letting their terminated employees formally resign. This way, you can also be eligible for unemployment benefits.

Being out of employment and eventually changing jobs are not easy to deal with. But if you are put in such situations, there is not much you can do about it. The only option you should take is to make your situation better. By keeping a good relationship with your former boss, you can still turn this event into something that will open doors for better career opportunities.
