Hi Everyone, It is bad enough that these sub humans prey on the vulnerable in e-mails but now they have turned to Social networking sites. I just got  a message from a person in another social networking site and I reported it to admin and warned others. It looks like one of those Nigerian scams. These so called humans may try here so I am pre-warning you all. I know most of you are savvy enough to spot them but some of our new people may get caught out. If any of you get these type of e-mails or messages, never respond to them. You will get scammed. Here is the message I received and I took out the contact e-mail. START: From Miss Carine Abel - messages to/fro From Car Abel: From Miss Carine Abel   From Miss Carine Abel Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire. Please respond me to my private email id xxxxxxxxx@yahoo.com for more details.                         (CONFIDENTIAL MESSAGE) Dear  Good thing to write you. I have a proposal for you. This however is not mandatory nor will I in any manner compel you to honour against your will. I am Miss Carine Abel, the only daughter of my late parents Mr.and Mrs Abel. My father was a highly reputable busnness magnet-(a Cocoa Merchant, Diamond and Gold Dealer)who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days. It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on 2nd March 2006.Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of his who travelled with him at that time. But God knows the truth! My mother died when I was just 4 years old,and since then my father took me so special. Before his death on 2nd March 2006 he called the secretary who accompanied him to the hospital and told him that he has the sum of Seventeen  Million,Seven  Hundred Thousand United State Dollars.(USD$17.7000) deposited in  SECURITY COMPANY in Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire . He further told him that he deposited the consigmnet in my name as the next of kin,and he registered the consigment as family valuables and finally issued a written instruction to his lawyer whom he said is in possession to handle all the necessary legal documents of the consigment which he deposited in SECURITY COMPANY and he instructed the lawyer to hand over the doucments to me whenever I need it. I am  a university undergraduate and really don't know what to do. Now I want a foreign partner who assist me to retrieve this consigment from the SECURITY  COMPANY in Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire . This is because I have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of my father actually brought sorrow to my life.I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards. Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded. Now permit me to ask these few questions:- 1.Can you kindly tell me what the type of a profitable venture this fund will uesd to invest avoid waste of it. 2). Can you honestly help me as your daughter? 3). Can I completely trust you? 4). What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you after you have collected this consigment on my behalf? Please, consider this and get back to me as soon as possible with your telephone number for oral disscussion and keep it highly confidential with yourself. Thank you so much. Yours Sincerely, Miss Carine Abel. Please respond me to my private email id xxxxxxx@yahoo.com for more details. END:

Thank you Lateef,

You were right. I baited the scammers. With your helpful advice, I have since forwarded the scam mail, with properties (such as IP address), to scam@efccnigeria.org A more pragmatic approach.

Sorry, Nigel. It appears I got you wrong. I thought you said you had written back to 2 Nigerians, meaning the scammers. That was why I suggested writing to the Nigerian anti-scam agency instead.

Nigel,

It is not a good idea to respond to these scam mails - all you are doing is confirming that your email address actually exists - somrthing the scammer is not aware of until you tell him or her.

Nigel, please go beyond writing to individual Nigerian scammers next time by contacting Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at http://www.efccnigeria.org. Make sure you report deatails, especially the IP address. A better effect will be produced that way. Thank you for helping to fight online and other crimes.

I wrote back to two Nigerians today. You can do it too. What larks!

Dear Wendy,

I like to know the name of your pets before we do business. Do you have a cat? Dog? Siberian Fighting Fish?

Regards,

Mark

I am to so sick of these bogus emails and the more and more I erase them the more they appear just in a different form and nature or person place or venture.

All we can do really is report them and see how long it takes for them to resolve if they do in time.

This is a new off-the- net scam that I just read about this morning:
You've been shopping, get in and start your car and notice a large piece of paper in your rear view mirror blocking your view. Of course, you get out to remove what you think the wind might have blown up on your window, the car is running, the door is open, your purse left inside, AND before you realize what has happened someone has jumped in your car, taking off with everything and almost running you over in the process.

Hi Arthur,

You're right in that we should be working to stop these scams, but
people being people, there are always going to be those who will
fall for them. Because of greed, or stupidity, who knows?
There are always those who will make a living from others, like
parasites, unfortunately.

Lest we forget,

Scams are not limited to the internet.

There are all sorts of scams being run all the time. many of them use newspaper advertising (job scams, auction scams &c) and ho many people do not know someone who has been scammed by a used car or insurance salesman?

Scams abound because they work.

We should be trying to work on making sure that they cease to work so that they die off of their own accord.

Snakesmum made a valid point, but it may be necessary in future to have official records of the arrests made, the names of the culprits, the nationalities involved, the punishments meted out to them, including deportation, where applicable. We owe future generations authentic history.

Pehaps the scam started off in Nigeria, and some of the people involved
came overseas. I think we've had some recent arrests in Sydney and
Melbourne, of Africans (Not necessarily Nigerian) caught sending this
type of scam out on the internet.

Thank you, Lisa, for that useful link on spams (scams?).

I was, surprised, however, that Nigeria is not even on the top-ten list. One can then wonder why we have had a lot of fuss over Nigeria as if she was the worst culprit. As I have always believed, no nation is free of vices; neither is there any one exclusively saintly.

Some hair splitters may argue that spams are not necessarily scams. They could be right to some extent. Some spams are not scams, but all scams are spams. I daresay t

Hi, Lisa,

So much for the Can Spam act or whatever all the American marketers boast about being in compliance with.

Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoir don't even rank - very interesting. Maybe we should rename these letters the North American letters?

Hello Dave,

Aren't they just the silliest people on the net, I agree.

As long as we can access the tools so will they.

Its a crying shame really.

Oh yes I have a great resource that shows which places are producing
the scammers on the net, take a peek.

I saw a program on tv recently regarding a sting operation as authorities set out to catch the scammers. They caught them, but they still continue to operate. Stay way from these scammers. Good call Dave.
Cheers
