Members at Apsense are running scared.
I have received many comments from contacts that Apsense is getting to be a negative place. I Don’t agree!!
After spending several days with the Top it or Drop it sociology, I think a few simple changes would fix our problem.
First -
Change the terminology to - I Agree or I Disagree. People are taking the Top it or Drop it personally and frankly I think some people are using it to dig at other members personally.
To drop someone is personal whereas it is acceptable to disagree with someone professionally.
Next-
(And most Important) - Base a persons score on the number of votes not how many people agree with them.
With the system as it is right now a person could have 50 votes half Top it and half Drop it. Now their score is -1. Then someone comes along and writes a cute little note that means nothing and their two friends Top it. They are a +2
The person that brought the most traffic through good conversation looses and I believe this is where the negative feelings are coming from.
With the NEW system -
If someone DARES to SPAM - well no votes keeps them at a ZERO where they belong.
With the Old system-
Members feel like they are in the middle of an online version of the TV series Survival, and you have to play a sociology game to get + votes.
Many things I have written would never see the light of day if I had to please everyone.
* On a personal note – I am addicted to Apsense. We are seeing a member driven site develop at an incredible pace. What I love is truly how much power Apsense has given the voice of its members to shape the program.

Neither one of the conditions will ever work in their current state. It is imposible and will never happen. Sorry Lynn but Valerie was on the right track but like I said neither way will ever work, not as they are today. All this is doing is hurting people, from the ones that do abuse the system and giving them even more power. There is a better way, hmmm A better Way, Kinda catchy LOL. Stay tuned for further updates but right now I need to log into my day job at World Finances...oh brother.

First off I'd like to thank you for the great suggestions. We try our best to look at every user's insight, especially the ones that are expressed constructively. Even though apsense was created from ground zero by our in house programmers hence we can make any changes for our system, we can only make changes that keeps our core business model.
In any event, the Apsense team had meeting this morning and we did bring up this subject. We like your ideas and your supporting reasons. T

I know you thought you were getting a spam rating system and I like the direction Apsense is going in - it just needs to go a few steps farther or encourage participation.
My point is if I have a -50 Drop it that 200 hundred people have commented ON! I darn well want to be posted at the top.
Why should the person that subject line reads ‘Hello Everyone’ and one friend comments ‘Hi’ back with a + 1 thumbs up get posted higher than my - 50 ???

Top and Drop it was implemented to keep quality content showing where members could access it easier and at the same time it keeps the spam down on the list.. We decided that this was much better than the spam reporting that was done before.
I have been earning online for many years now... there will always be those, who find the loopholes and try to work the system. But, as a whole this is not the issue here at apsense. Over all as a community this is working. Lynn

I have said it before and I will say it again –
TOP it DROP it has nothing to do with SPAM!
Listen I know there are those of you that like to think that Apsense is all group of friends that want to play together.
BUT get real!
Millions of dollars are spent on breaking Google’s ranking code. It only takes a few people to break the Apsense code to ruin it for all.

Valerie and others made a good point. However, as I mentioned before on a similar post, whatever rating is adopted (drop, top, agree, disagree) must be justified with a good reason. This way, lazy, frivolous, patronizing or malicious ratings would be reduced drastically. A little space should, therefore, be created for such justifying comments.

My question would be...how many members do you think there are purposely voting posts down? My guess is that it is a very small percentage. The top and drop was implemented to keep quality content up front, while the ads and other content go to the bottom. I think it is working well. There are always great posts to read when I go the groups page. And I no longer have to wade through the advertisements. It is a system that is much better than the spam reporting. Lynn

Hurrah! The soap box is back on track after a refit. There is an old saying. "If you can't stand the heat!!!" That applies to quite a number of things and in this instance it appears that some people have got a thin skin, are over sensitive, have lived a too sheltered a life, to be in business on their own.
There are a number of community sites out there that make you pay to advertise on, to send messages to members etc. So as far as APsense goes it's way ahead of the game. Yes you can upgrade

Is that under the system as it is right now I could go and give you a drop it on all your post. (just because you disagreed with me)
This would be a big negative to you.
But if we change the system as I suggested to a - I disagree – I would just be adding points to you by clicking on all your post and would not be hurting your business.

I like the system personally. I never take anything personally. I absolutely love this site and the main reason is because the of the NO SPAM policy Apsense has. I love everyone here that I have met and look forward to a long relationship with them.
