Every teenager goes through depression at one point in their teenage life. But, what is depression? Well, depression is a prolonged sense of sadness and hopelessness

HERE ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF DEPRESSION

Causes

  1. Loss of a loved one or other major loss.
  2. Change in life status
  3. Heredity (if a parent suffers from depression, children may be more likely to develop depression).
  4. Life stresses (school troubles, relationship problems, dissatisfaction with job, etc.).
  5. Past experience with mental disorders

Knowing how to recognize depression is a good skill to have. Some of the most common signs and symptoms of depression are:

  1. Prolonged feelings of sadness
  2. Prolonged feelings of hopelessness
  3. Lack of interest in things that used to hold interest
  4. Continued sleeping difficulties
  5. Regular episodes of crying
  6. Feelings of detachment or "not caring"
  7. Feelings of continual tiredness
  8. Feelings of "not wanting to get out of bed"
  9. Suicidal thoughts

 

 

 

When someone is depressed, they need help.

  • If their depression is self-manageable, the person may just need a good friend or mentor to talk to in order to figure out the causes and make changes.
  • When the depression persists, it is very important that the person receive appropriate professional help.
  • Therapists, counselors and psychologists can provide critical intervention that can help an individual find his or her way back to a healthier mental outlook.
  • It is very important that a person suffering from depression get help as soon as possible after recognizing the signs.

 

Possible treatment options may include:

  1. Speaking regularly with a counselor, therapist, or psychologist
  2. Medication as prescribed by a doctor or psychologist
  3. Starting or increasing an exercise regimen
  4. Improving nutrition
  5. Learning stress and time management techniques
  6. Increasing social outlets (talking to people, getting your feelings out)
  7. Short-term treatment center stays
  8. Long-term treatment center stays
