Extended opportunity to visit Plymtree glass artist Siddy Langley's studio.
Leading British glass artist, Siddy Langley, is inviting guests into her studio and gallery to view her new work in the county-wide arts event, Devon Open Studios which is the largest showcase for artists in the county. She is one of hundreds of artists opening their doors for 16 days from 5-20 of September.
Siddy has opened her studio for the past few years and is welcoming visitors at Longmeadows Studio, Plymtree, Devon EX15 2JW .
Unfortunately, due to road works, Weaver Lane has been closed to traffic this week which has made it hard for visitors to reach Siddy's studio. "I will keep my studio open for an additional week from 21st to 27th September so that those who could not get through are still able to come and have an unique experience - watch the glass making and even create their own glass coasters" said Siddy.
During Devon Open Studios Siddy is doing continuous glass blowing demonstrations. This is a rare chance to see a glass artist in action and enjoy the excitement of the hot glass process. Each piece is unique and to see it created in front of your eyes is an unforgettable experience.
Siddy Langley started glassblowing thirty six years ago when she attended a weekend glassmaking class with Peter Layton in London and was immediately “hooked". She opened her own studio in Maidenhead in 1987 and moved to her current location in Devon in 1997.
Watching Siddy work is quite an experience as she twirls the hot glass round her head using centrifugal force to lengthen the piece. It is unusual to see a glass maker working alone as glass has traditionally been made in “teams" or, at the very least, with an assistant.
In her glass Siddy reflects her everyday life in Plymtree and her vivid renditions of the local landscape, birds, plants and animals are breathtaking.
The interaction between artists and viewer creates opportunities that support every stage of artistic production and development. Siddy enjoys this feedback with her visitors and is always ready to act on comments or suggestions.
Siddy explains... “on one occasion recently someone asked if the piece I was demonstrating was orange. I told them “no" it was blue and green and the “orange" that they could see was just the heat". When the visitor expressed disappointment that the piece wasn't orange I quickly added some orange powdered glass to the hot glass and a “new" design was born - far more exciting than the one I had originally planned...." Visiting any of the many artists exhibiting in Devon Open studio is enormously informative because you can see at a glance how the artist works and have the chance to speak to them directly about the creative process.
Devon Open Studios produces a comprehensive guide to help visitors plan their own art trail and combine browsing art with enjoyment of the county's fantastic scenery. Free copies of the guide are now available at tourist information centres, libraries, galleries, and hotels. These guides are a useful resource long after Devon Open Studios has ended as many of the artists welcome visitors by appointment all year round.
