Saree is an apparel that has always been synonymous with the India sub-continent in general and India in particular. With more than eighty styles or drapes, every region in India lays claim to a distinct drape ranging from the Gujarati, Bengali, Chettinad (Tamil Nadu) and Corgi styles as well as the airhostess and modern drapes preferred by women in cities and towns. Similarly, every region of India has a distinct weave or material that is preferred based on their lifestyle. The world famous Kanjivaram and Thanjavur sarees are very different from their lighter weight cousins the Banarasi Silks. The Tussurs, Jamdhanis, Pochampallis and Kota sarees are some of the other very famous weaves that have stood the test of time. They are lovely creations that are loved across generations. Sarees today are also available in chiffons, georgette crepe and tissue. In fact, many designers prefer to design sarees in these materials for their versatility. Embellished with embroidery and Kundan work from our traditional styles these designer sarees and blouses look elegant and stylish.

Modern sari

With changing lifestyles and dressing styles, the traditional Indian saree has also metamorphosed and incorporates many modern trends. The latest saree designs have added a modern touch while retaining the elegance of the traditional garment. Inspired by the modern woman, Indian designers have taken the saree to newer heights. Heavy silks have been replaced by more traditional Indian textures like handlooms as well as lighter georgettes and chiffons. They are also embellished with zardosi and other traditional embroidery for an Indian feel and look. The blouses and cholis have also evolved to include spaghetti straps and halter necks. Worn either traditionally or with a modern twist, the saree is perhaps the most versatile of garments used by woman of all ages.

The Traditional Indian Bride

Indian brides too, prefer to wear custom designed sarees as per their tastes and theme of the wedding. Most bridal collections in any Indian Fashion show always showcase sarees desginged by popular designers like Ritu Kumar, Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi, etc. Indian women prefer sarees and other traditional attire for weddings and religious functions. The saree is an essential part of any Indian wedding trousseau and is complemented by appropriate jewelry and other accessories. There has been a change in texture preferences from the heavier sarees worn by previous generations to lighter material often specifically designed for the various wedding related ceremonies like the Sangeet, Mehndi, etc.

Celebrities and Indian Designers

Sarees designed by India's leading designers are also seen at most page 3 events. Top designers like Sabyasachi prefer to work only with Indian silhouettes and design garments using traditional weaves and patterns with a modern touch.
