How I Saved My Rug From A Red Wine Stain

Last Saturday was having a party at home. I had invited some of my friends. They came with some of their friend, boyfriends, girlfriends... In short – there were a lot of people in my place. No problem, I was having a drink, dancing, talking with everyone. I felt great. I was having the time of my life..

10 am in the next morning. My alarm clock rang. I was late for my italian lesson. Somehow I managed to get out of bed and I was on my way to the bathroom when...oh no! There was a huge red stain on the carpet. In the first moment I screamed terrified “Oh my God, there is blood on the rug”. After a few seconds I calmed down and realized it was not blood, but red wine. Ok, nobody got hurt or killed in my place, fortunately.

My second thought was “What, the hell, am I going to do with this HUGE red wine spot?”

After a few seconds of wondering I decided I have to option:

  • to call my mum and ask her what to do
  • to check on Internet

But it was 10.20 am and I was going to be late for my italian lesson, so I left the carpet, spoiled with wine for the afternoon.

As I was walking back to home 2 hours later. I had to decide what to do with the stain on the carpet. I started considering again the two options.

  1. Call my mom: If I had called her to ask for advice, she may at first got angry or upset, because the carpet was a present from her. Besides that she would ask a lot of question, I would have to admit that I was having a party or to lie about it.... no, no too complicated
  2. Check for the solution of my carpet problem online seemed a better idea.

And I was not wrong. It turned out Internet was full of posts and articles showing proffers for my problem. Let's see:

Salt

“Salt can be poured on the spill to keep the wine from setting until you figure out which method of clean up you would like to go with”. I think it was a bit too late for this. May be if I had seen the spot earlier. But it was already completely dry and salt won't work.

Wine

Believe it or not, but I found out from Internet that you could remove your red wine stain, covering it with white wine. I decided to give it a try and went to the living room to get some white wine. Unfortunately, all the 3 glasses of white wine were completely empty. I didn't loose hope. I checked out for another ideas.

Shaving cream

Really? From a short article, posted on Huffington post, I found out a man can remove a red wine stain on a carpet applying a dollop of foam shaving cream over the spot. Ok, it may had worked, but I'm a woman, so I don't have a shaving cream.

Baking soda

I was surprised to find out that baking soda is the ultimate green cleaner. You can clean your oven, bathroom, floor... and carpet with it. Too bad I didn't have any of it at home. May be I should buy a packet and give it a try some time.

After I spent about and hour searching the best way to clean my carpet, I suddenly thought: "Why should I try to remove the red wine stain from my rug, risking to ruin it, when I can ask somebody to do this for me?" And by somebody I didn't mean the person who did the spot. I decided to use professional carpet cleaning services. And I didn't regret. After the experts took care of it my rug looked like brand new again.

That's how I - The Not Perfect Housewife - saved my rug. How do you clean red wine stain from a carpet?
