Zombieland: A Fine Example of Horror Comedy
Expecting yet another standard, slightly clichéd zombie movie? Zombieland will surprise you pleasantly. Taking a look at the cast will give away some hints about the quality and the specifics of this refreshing horror comedy.
Plot
Zombieland tells the story of a nerdy college student named Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg). Columbus lives at a time during which plague turns humans into ferocious zombies.
Columbus has managed to survive the plague by following a set of rules that range from wearing a seatbelt to being suspicious of public toilets and not trying to act as a hero, regardless of the circumstances.
When Columbus meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), his live changes. Tallahassee loves guns and has very little fear for the man-eating zombies. The two of them join forces with a pair of sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) in an attempt to survive and to reach the "promised land" where humans will be safe.
What Makes Zombieland Good?
The film’s script surprises with sharpness and the ability to turn a boring concept into something innovative and enjoyable. Lovers of classic horror comedies will fall in love with this one because it delivers genre-defining punch lines.
Zombieland takes a potentially disastrous concept and turns it upside down. The horror genre has always been popular but very few manage to achieve the effect of a truly scary movie. This film has no such intentions. Its main goal is to entertain and it manages to produce some of the most hilarious scenes in a long time.
The zombies in the film create the post-apocalyptic setting but this comedy should be perceived as a road trip that two very different individuals share. As time passes, the two characters learn more about each other, which helps them bond and provides the audience with interesting bits of information.
Zombieland does not pretend to be a serious and scary horror movie, which is one of its main accomplishments. Its main goal is to make the audience laugh and if the occasional zombie is needed to achieve that effect, then so be it.
Oh, did we mention the Bill Murray cameo? Bill Murray playing himself in the movie is probably one of the most memorable and hilarious moments. The movie is worth seeing, even if only for this cameo role.
On the Downside
Zombieland is a classic road trip film, despite the fact that the world has been transformed by the devastating plague. The concept is something that all avid moviegoers are familiar with. If you are looking for an innovative horror movie development, for something that you have never seen before, you should probably opt for another film.
The script is a bit scattered, which may trouble some moviegoers. The good jokes give the film essence and soul but the moments between the great punch lines tend to drift into the realm of clichés.
Despite its few shortcomings, Zombieland is an entertaining horror comedy that will get you laughing, even if you are not a particularly big fan of the genre. The actors give it their best and the jokes are refreshing. Overall, Zombieland can be ranked as an 8/10 film that turns a boring concept into a hilarious experience.
