There is no denying the fact that refrigerator is one of the most important household appliances. It runs all day and protects food items from getting spoilt. That is why even a minor problem with the machine can cause significant inconvenience for us. Fortunately, a well maintained machine does not break down that often. There are, however, some common issues that you may face with your fridge despite keeping up with all the maintenance. Once you are able to identify the problem, finding solution won’t be difficult. Let us take a look at some of the common refrigerator malfunctions:

Refrigerator isn't working properly:
If your refrigerator fails to run properly, there may be a number of causes behind it. See if the interior light is working, and check whether you can hear the sound of the motor or the fan. These are some of the common signs of a properly working fridge, and if you do not find any of these signs, there may be some issue with the machine’s power supply. Check to make sure you have plugged the appliance into a working outlet. You can check the outlet by plugging a lamp or a small appliance in. the lamp/appliance won’t work if there’s not enough power to the socket.

If the power sockets aren’t working properly, you would need to check the household fuses or circuit breakers. Such problems often occur when the fuse needs to be replaced or the breaker needs to be reset. You may need to call a licensed electrician who would repair the outlet. However, the outlet will only run if there is enough power supply to the household. If the appliance does not run even when it is plugged into a functional outlet, there may be some issues with the wiring or compressor. These are issues that only a qualified technician should handle.

The refrigerator does not defrost:
This is another common problem that you may face with the appliance. In most of the modern refrigerator models, there is a device for monitoring the defrost system. When there is a problem with the defrost thermostat or defrost timer of the machine, you may face problems related to defrosting. In order to diagnose this problem, you would first need to unplug the fridge. Once you are done, you will need to take out the evaporator cover. This cover is there for protecting the cooling coil. After removing this cover, you must plug the fridge in once again. Don’t forget to turn the defrost timer in defrost mode. If you are having troubles turning the dial, use a screw driver. The refrigerator does not run when it is on defrost mode. So, do not be alarmed when it stops. Wait for 5 minutes and check whether the defrost heater has started working.
