Demon Hunter as a new class in Diablo 3 has unique power resource and abilities. The resource system is quite complicated than other four classes. Hatred and Discipline are two types of resource for Demon Hunter.

If you have 150 hatred, you can start with 4 hatred per second. While if you start with 30 Discipline, only one discipline per second can regenerate. Both resources are generated slow. 30 seconds is a full pool of discipline while 37.5 seconds are for a full pool of Hatred.

There are three abilities for two resource pools of Demon Hunter.

Hantred Spends tend to be more powerful, which can hit a wider area. Or have a debuff. Fan of Knives can do 320% weapon damage without runes, impale can have a stun and Multishot cover a huge area.

As for Hatred Generators, they are more likely to be weaker instead of spending any resource. They tend to regenerate it when need single-target. The Grenade ability can be moved to give over 8 and Evasive Fire can regenerate four in particular.

In terms of Discipline Spenders, they will give them buffs or just run away instead of direct damage. For instance, you can rely on Caltrops which can give your powerful snare. Shadow Power can give you leech life, whilce Smoke Screen can help you escape from the enemy.

In short, you can use your Hatred Generators if you are general Demon Hunter as they can keep your resource high. But if you want to give more single-target damage, you can use Hungering Arrow or Hatred Spenders.

You can use your Hatred for AoE spells to take down packs when your Hatred topped off. Using Discipline abilities can help you escape from bad situation. Discipline abilities can buff yourself to take down anything you are encountering while you are in safe.
