Common Myths Associated with Graphic Design Jobs
1. Myth 1 – Graphic Designing is a Sure Shot way to get Rich
Most freshers and students in the field of graphic design live in these assumptions. Over and above the passion for design and loving what they do, most of them believe that as soon as they graduate, there will be a limousine waiting for them at their doorstep. Some also believe that graphic design will bring them fame and fortune.
Unfortunately, it is important to realize that this career is highly competitive and hence employers don’t need to offer extremely high salary packages to keep their design requirements fulfilled. There is always some individual out there willing to work for a lot less.
However, if you are genuinely talented and are able to put in the hard work, there are high chances of your progress amongst other designers. At the same time, you cannot expect to earn as much as a doctor or a lawyer.
2. Myth 2 – Graphic Design Jobs are a Cake Walk
Most people get into this field with the assumption that as long as you are creative it’s going to be fun. The fact of the matter is that this career is not easy, and it is not a game. Most designers tend to put in long hours each day and work under high pressure situations with tight deadlines and demanding clients. Besides designing, you are also expected to perform tasks in accounting, sales and customer service.
Furthermore, there are high chances that you will be working on more than one project at the same time, making your task even more challenging that you believed it to be.
3. Myth 3 – I Do not Need to Study after I get my College Degree
If you are not into reading and not open to continued education, then this career is not for you. When you graduated, you may have worked on older version of Corel Draw and Photoshop. It is entirely up to you to continually upgrade yourself to new software and design tools or simply perish amidst the newer generation that enters the graphic design industry. It is crucial that you stay on top of the latest software, trends and programs to expand your skill set.
Finally, just like you thought your workday would involve spending hours in front of fancy flat screen PCs, designing in peace while listening to your favourite music, the you do not need to a people person too, is evidently untrue. Most designers are expected to deal with clients or marketing teams on a routine basis. You need to be prepared to work with constant distractions, be ready for unplanned phone conferences, meetings and a hundred emails to go through on a routine basis.
