Travelling along Queensland’s southern coast line can be a great get away for the whole family. Then driving past Brisbane and getting up towards the Sunshine Coast there are a lot of things to do to keep everyone occupied.

Maroochydore
A few kilometres north of Mooloolaba is Alexandra Headland – a tower-strewn but relaxed coastal community known to locals as 'Alex', where nothing much happens and that's the way they like it. Alexandra Headland's beach segues into Maroochydore Beach and the estuary of the Maroochy River - which, in turn, flows through Maroochydore @, seat of local government and the commercial hub of the Sunshine Coast. Located 98km (61 miles) north of Brisbane, Maroochydore (pop: 18,000) is a pleasant place that keeps its feet firmly on the ground. As with most of the settled areas along the coast, the town has experienced a development boom - which, if nothing else, has brought good restaurants along with inflated real-estate values. The city's best asset is the Maroochy River, an easy-flowing waterway that imparts a sense of calm. Cotton Tree Park, on the south bank, is a sweet place to picnic. Conservation parks occupy the northern bank.

Coolum
Laid-back Coolum has two assets: the unspoiled Marcoola Beach and Mount Coolum National Park. The beach is overlooked by the swish 5-star Hyatt Regency hotel, complete with 18-hole championship golf course. The hotel grounds adjoin Mount Coolum National Park, which contains coastal wallum, paperbark wetlands and rainforest remnants that have virtually disappeared from the surrounding lowlands. Peregrine falcons nest along the cliff faces. After rain, waterfalls cascade down the sides. You can clamber up and down the craggy 208-metre (680ft) peak.

Noosa
Nestling beside the usually tranquil waters of Laguna Bay, Noosa O has been called the Cannes of Australia, a heady blend of beauty, sophistication and high finance. Noosa Heads is the chic, high-density heart of the Noosa region. It comprises the iconic Hastings Street strip, nearby Noosa Hill and the adjacent national parks. Its real estate is highly sought-after, with prices that reflect exclusivity and scarcity. Only slightly less valuable is the real estate in Noosa proper - a region that begins at Peregian Beach, extending north through Marcus Beach, Sunrise Beach and Sunshine Beach to Noosa Heads, then along the southern bank of the Noosa River through.
