Oral Health and Diabetes
Joanne Barker (WebMd) has been studying connection
between the oral health and different diseases and she says that your mouth is the
gateway to your body.
How does this happen?
” Bacteria that builds up
on teeth make gums prone to infection. The immune system moves in to attack the
infection and the gums become inflamed. The inflammation continues unless the
infection is brought under control.” (Parker, J. at http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/features/oral-health-the-mouth-body-connection).
The inflammation and the chemicals it releases eat
away at the gums and bone structure that hold the teeth in the place and the
result is disease know as periodontitis and and the inflammation can even cause
problems in the rest of the body (Parker, J).
There is a strong relationship between diabetes and periodontitis. Inflammation in the mouth weakens your body´s ability to control blood sugar. If you have diabetes you have trouble processing sugar because of a lack of insulin. Periodontal disease complicates diabetes because the inflammation impairs your body´s ability to utilize insulin, says Pamela McClain, DDS, president of the American Academy of Periodontology, quoted In Parker´s article.
She even says that diabetes and periodontitis have a two-way relationship; high blood sugar provides ideal conditions of all kinds of infections to grow, including gum infections.
But there are even good news: “Fortunately
you can use the gum disease-diabetes relationship to your favor: managing one
can help bring the other under control” (McClain, P. quoted in Parker, J.).
American
Diabetes Association writes on their website: “There are more bacteria in your mouth right now than
there are people on Earth. If those germs settle into your gums, you've got gum
disease. Unfortunately, if you have diabetes, you are at higher risk for gum
problems. Poor blood glucose control makes
gum problems more likely”.
There are
about 26 million Americans who have diabetes and it can be surprising for them, and all of us, to learn about an
unexpected complication associated with this condition.
Research has
shown that there is an increased prevalence of gum disease among those with
diabetes as well as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
Even their research
suggests that the relationship between serious gum disease and diabetes is
two-way. And like all infections, serious gum disease may be a factor in
causing blood sugar to rise and may make diabetes harder to control (http://www.diabetes.org/).
In summary:
if you don´t take care of your teeth, you can develop diabetes. BUT you can
even avoid it and if you already have diabetes, make your blood sugar level
better, just by taking care of your teeth.
