Acid Reflux: Different Pain, Same Solution?
The pain may be different, and the process might take a different road, but men and woman with acid reflux both have at least one thing in common: reflux sucks.
According to a new Australian study, gastroesophageal reflux, also known as acid reflux, may affect men and women with different symptoms and severity. Women are more likely to seek help for heart burn than men. Yet of the patients who seek treatment for acid reflux, men tend to have more physical symptoms of this troublesome condition.
On a related note, Digestive Science Reflux Elimination System is a three-step natural therapy to reduce acid reflux and the effects it has on both men and women. And it's formulated specifically to address a common cause of acid reflux. The cause is lack of digestive enzymes. And the pain can be severe.
About Acid Reflux
To clarify, acid reflux is a chronic condition in which stomach acid escapes through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) that separates the stomach from the esophagus. Symptoms include heartburn, chronic sore throat, abdominal pain and ongoing hiccups.
While it's common to experience these symptoms occasionally, if they occur more than twice a week, you have acid reflux disease. Risk factors include:
- obesity
- eating large meals
- lying down after a meal
- smoking
- acidic foods
- excessive alcohol consumption
As researchers in the Australian study discovered, men and women may be more vulnerable to specific symptoms. And the consequences of acid reflux can be severe.
About the Study
The study consisted of nearly 3,000 adults living in the community and over 2,000 men and women who were having reflux surgery. The study was recently published in Archives of Surgery.
Both sets of women, in the community and the patients, reported heartburn more than men, with symptoms being more frequent and severe. The women were also more likely to complain of trouble swallowing solid food.
Yet, of the patients who went for reflux surgery, the men tended to have more advanced stages of reflux disease. The researchers noted the male patients were generally seven years younger than the women who went for surgery. And the men tended to have greater problems with the LES and related valves that separate the stomach and esophagus.
While it's possible that the men were born with weak valves, it's just as likely, according to the researchers, that the condition occurred over time, with chronic acid exposure - a problem compounded by the fact that men were less likely to seek medical help for their reflux.
What's particularly troublesome is that, left untreated, chronic acid exposure can lead to esophagitis, which changes the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Continue down that road and you're at risk of esophageal cancer, which, the researchers point out, men are four time more likely to develop than women.
And All This Means...?
Men and women both suffer from acid reflux. Women are more likely to report heart burn and seek help for reflux. And when they do seek help, men are more likely to have advanced symptoms of acid reflux, and considerably more likely to let reflux take a bite out of their health and well-being.
Yet, while the study documents the patterns of acid reflux and when and how people seek treatment, it does not address the causes of reflux. And among those causes, lack of digestive enzymes, which can increase production of stomach acid to the point that reflux occurs, the symptoms arise, and you're in a world of grief.
