Suspicion by the family --questions Sheriff's department

Just yesterday I posted about how the 4th Avenue Jail in Phoenix, Arizona is one the toughest jails in the country. Soon after posting I saw the report of yet another inmate dead in the jail intake. This time the inmate was Raymond Manuel Farinas a forty year old man from Phoenix, Arizona. He was booked in the county jail on June 3, 2012 on suspicion of carrying a weapon by a prohibited person. It was the result of a traffic stop where Farinas was a passenger.

Family is concerned about how he died for several reasons. His former girlfriend saw his body and remarked upon the bruises and scratches on his body. He also had a black eye and a cut above his nose. Neither injury is seen in his booking photo of the same day (see picture).

His mother Carmen was told by the Sheriff's Department that his death was a result of choking on a peanut butter sandwich. His mother however informed the media that it was highly doubtful since Raymond was allergic to peanut butter and therefore didn't eat it.

This death follows the death of Ernest Atencio, age 44, who was arrested on December 20 and died December 30, 2012 as a result of being tasered by a dozen law enforcement personnel. The family of Atencio recently filed a lawsuit for twenty million dollars in damages against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Organization. Sadly this is not the first of such lawsuits. Over the leadership of Arpaio the county has paid about $500 dollars in lawsuits for jail related deaths.
