Water constitutes approximately 66 percent of the human body. Without this vital liquid, your body would fail to do many of the most simple and complex processes. MayoClinic.com recommends drinking eight, 8-oz. glasses of water each day as part of a balanced diet. Consuming water has several effects on the body, many of which are fundamental to daily living.
Hydration

Water hydrates your body and is the basis of saliva and fluids surrounding the joints. Hydration is particularly important if you are exercising, as you lose water due to perspiration. Joy Bauer suggests in her book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total Nutrition" to drink 16 to 24 oz. of water 2 hours prior to exercise to prevent dehydration, which can lead to fainting and vomiting. The color of your urine is a useful indicator of your hydration levels. A clear to pale-yellow hue is desirable, but a dark and concentrated tint means you should be drinking more.

Transport and Absorption of Vitamins and Minerals

Regularly consuming water is extremely important in the transport and absorption of many vitamins and minerals. For example, water-soluble vitamins like B complex vitamins and vitamin C quickly dissolve and absorb into the intestines. It is especially vital to keep your water intake consistent as your body does not naturally store these vitamins and requires you to consume them on a daily basis. Essential minerals like calcium, iodine, manganese, potassium and phosphorus require the presence of water to effectively reach and absorb into vital organs and cells, according to Kumar Pushkar in the article "Primary Tissues and Growth" published in "Competition Science Vision."
Detoxification

Perhaps the most basic, yet most important effect of consuming water is its detoxification properties. Water helps to move toxins out from the filtering organs -- the liver and kidneys -- and also assists in the metabolism of food. If you have renal complications such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections or associated conditions, consuming adequate amounts of water helps to flush away accumulating pathogenic bacteria and excess salt.
