Working From Home, Is It For You?

Recently I met an old friend I had not seen in about a year.  Last I saw him he had been with the railway for almost 12 years.  He had a good position, above average income and a great benefits and only worked 32 hrs a week. Jokingly I asked him “How’s the train business doing” and was caught totally off guard when he told me that he had left that job 10 months earlier to “Buy real estate with no money down.”  “Wow Jerry, you always dreamed of being your own boss” (not his real name) “Tell me all about it”

The first 2 weeks of his new found freedom Jerry spent on vacation, the next 3 months reading the training package he had bought, checking out listings and golf lessons.  Then, as he had not made any money yet, he bought the extra training package for $5,000 and went on a second honeymoon with his wife in Europe for 6 weeks!

When he got back he renovated his basement and put in an office and rec room, landscaped the backyard and dug a garden for his wife, went camping 2x, and bought a new 4×4.

I was totally impressed and said so, I also asked him to show me how I could do the same, as he was obviously making a ton of money.  The next words out of his mouth left me speechless “Oh I haven’t made any with it money yet.” …..  “I’ve been too busy”

9 to 5 Monday to Friday and a paycheck every few weeks is life for thousands of people.  Yet some dream of a work from home business where they are the boss and can set their own hours and their own incomes.

Nice dream, but is it really for you?  To start a business takes time, effort and money.  9 to 5 is what you give a boss, for yourself it may take 12, or more hours a day to get things rolling.

Like Jerry you may have a dream but that’s all it will be unless you take consistent action on a persistent basis. Not only do you need to be able to make yourself get out of bed but you need to be able to motivate yourself when things are moving slowly or even when they are not going as well as expected.

If you are not prepared or capable of dealing with the challenge of motivating yourself through obstacles do not go into business for yourself!  Otherwise like Jerry you will be begging your former employer for your old job back.
