One simple Fraud you can prevent

Here's one fraud that some have heard of and other may not have,  Check Washing.  This type of fraud is easy to prevent but first let me explain to you how it works.  Well step one is for the fraudster to get his grubby little paws on your check.  That is very easily accomplished through a simple action known as mailbox surfing.  Do you have one of those roadside mailboxes with the big red flag to let your mailman know you have outgoing mail?  The red flag says something else to the Mailbox surfer, "Come see what you can steal."  Maybe it's the payment for your cable bill.

The Mailbox surfers collect everything they think might contain a check or money order.  Then they take the checks which you wrote out and give them a little chemical bath.  The chemicals 'eat away' the ink.  In a typical ink pen the ink simply 'stains' the surface of the paper and is easily removed by the chemical bath.  Let the check dry and then fill it in again with whatever information they wish.

You wrote out the check so you don't think anything is wrong until COX cuts of your cable service int he middle of All My Children or the UFC Fight.  After all when you get that late notice they tell you to disregard it if you already sent payment and you know you did.

I did say it was easy to prevent and it is.  It's as simple as upgrading your ink pen.  Next time skip over the Bic and head for the Uni-ball.  Look for the Uni-ball-207 or any pen that says "Helps prevent Check Fraud/washing" or That it has pigmented ink.  That is the key.  Pigmented ink actually has pigmentation that binds with the fibers of the paper instead of just staining it.  That makes it resistant to chemical baths.

In addition to writing out checks, use that pen for any document that you do not want tampered with such as contracts etc.  Yes a simple pen can prevent check washing fraud.
