Kadapa district is endowed mainly with red and black soils ranging from poor to fertile soils. The soil of the district has been classified into red ferruginous soil and black soil.Paddy, Groundnut, Red gram, Cotton, Bengal gram are the major Agricultural crops. 'Korra’, orange, lime and betel leaf are the special crops. They are cultivated near river beds.

The over all condition of the forest in the district is not very good. IRRIGATION


Irrigation in Kadapa district is through major, medium and minor irrigation projects. There are 4 major, 5 medium completed irrigation projects in the district. The major irrigation projects are 1) Kurnool-Kadapa canal 2) TBP HLC Stage-I, 3) TBP HLC Stage-II (Mylavaram) and 4) Pulivendula Branch canal with a total ayacut of 2,27,896 acres. The five completed medium irrigation projects are 1.Lower Sagilru Project 2) Upper Sagileru Project 3) Pincha Project 4) Buggavanka Project and 5) Annamayya Project with a total ayacut of 55,625 acres. Ground water irrigates 86% of the total irrigation in the district and it plays a vital role in irrigation.

Fauna And Flora
Kadapa district is blessed with a series of beautiful valleys through which holy rivers like Pinakini (Pennar), Papaghni, Chitravathi, Mandavya, Cheyyeru cut across the district giving the land a sanctity of their own.

RAINFALL AND CLIMATE


Kadapa district receives rainfall from both the monsoon periods. The normal rainfall is 696mm against the state average of 925mm. Out of the total rain fall , 77 percent is received during July-November period.

CASTES AND TRIBES

Of the castes first in numerical importance are the Kapus (Reddi community), who are the principal landowners of the Deccan. They constitute nearly one-fourth of the total population of the district, and consist of many sub-divisions. Of these the Pedakanti, Motati, Kodide and Pokanati Kapus are chiefly found in the taluks of Jammalamadugu, Proddatur, Pulivendla, Kadapa and Kamalapuram ; while the Velanadu and Yelama Kapus, the latter of whom are vegetarians, seem to be the commonest sub-divisions in the three eastern taluks of the district. The Kapus are good steady farmers, true sons of the soil, andvery conservative.
