What is bacterial vaginosis exactly?  Before we can give consideration to cures for bacterial vaginosis, its absolutely imperative to understand precisely what the condition entails. Bacterial vaginosis is a type of infection inside the vaginal area due to the presence of harmful bacteria. Apart from the vagina, the infection can also affect the upper reproductive tract.

It is not generally known what directly causes bacterial vaginosis, but one factor is the improper balance bacteria and other organisms found naturally in the vagina. The disruptions in the balance inhibits the performance of protective bacteria, specifically lactobacilli which opens the vagina to an attack by bad organisms. Bacteria spread to the vaginal area from the rectum can also cause bacterial vaginosis.

A number of  factors have been identified to contribute to the development of this infectious disease. These factors include but are definitely not limited to poor hygiene, stress, vaginal douching, hot weather, and even intrauterine birth control devices. Multiple sex partners can also increase your risk of developing the condition. Abstinent women as well as virgins may however also suffer from the condition.

Bacterial vaginosis symptoms and signs include increased discharge with fishy or musky odor, itching, burning, discomfort and pain, in or around the genital area.  Some women experience bleeding as well.

Are there any cures for bacterial vaginosis?- Yes, a wide variety of cheap and effective cures are available for bacterial vaginosis, ranging from oral antibiotics, creams and gels. Flagyl and Cleocin are two prescription only drugs that top the list of most doctor recommended treatments. It is imperative for you to use medication as directed, even if symptoms disappear after a short period.

Can infection be prevented?- Yes, future outbreaks can be prevented with great success by just following a couple of very simple rules. Only douche for medically recommended reasons, always use a condom during sex, unless you are sure your partners is monogamous. After each bowel movement wipe from front to back.  Keep the vaginal area clean by washing and drying thoroughly.  Wear loose underwear made from 100 percent cotton and remember to clean applicators or removable birth control devices thoroughly before use.

It is important to consult your physician should any of the obvious symptoms of bacterial vaginosis appear or a current infection worsens. Given the wide availability of cures for bacterial vaginosis, there is no reason to be suffering in silence. If left untreated, the infection can lead to pelvic inflammation, cervicitis, endometritis, and in the case of pregnant women, complications with labor. As much as 50 percent of patients never experience any symptoms or signs, it is thus of utmost importance for women to have yearly gynecological check-ups.
