Safelists have often been used by marketers as a "safe" way to email people about their business offers. On the surface they seem like a good idea but there are good reasons why you should avoid using them as part of your marketing strategy.
Here are my Top 10 reasons to avoid Safelists:
1. Emails sent to safelists are usually automatically deleted and never seen by anyone.
2. Although you have been given permission to send to these lists, spam complaints can still arise.
3. Less than 1% of Emails are seen by a niche audience.
4. The response rate is very low.
5. If you don't automatically delete the emails you receive you can spend hours going through your emails deleting the rubbish from the "real" emails.
6. Anyone you are lucky enough to sign up from Safelists will only copy what you done and will continue the cycle and also use safelists.
7. Safelists are a less than professional way to promote.
8. Most free email clients block bulk email.
9. Time can be spent on more productive marketing strategies.
10. Social Networking is more effective
If you do use safelists...
Look for a safelist that uses a Points system - these safelists require all users to read emails to get points which are used to send emails to others.
Promote a program that would be more attractive to the audience you are sending to - Traffic exchanges etc. You could also direct users to a page that offers a free newsletter where they can subscribe to your legitimate list.
