Off The Beaten Track In India

Less than 5 hours drive from Delhi (over half of India's only super highway), less than 90 minutes from Agra (house of iconic Taj Mahal) lies the beautiful Chambal Safari Lodge or Mela Kothi that is known Was as before.

Lovingly managed by the wife team of Ram Pratap and Anu, who are both major environmentalists and conservationists, the Chambal Safari Lodge has a lot to offer. Unlike a great place to relax from the noise and pollution of other places in India, it also has the unique advantage that it is almost between two major rivers of India, the Yamuna and the Chambal. Less than 10 minutes from the lodge are the famous Shiva temples in Bateshwar.

On the banks of the Yamuna, it apparently was a series of 100 temples, but now about 30 survival, all of which are still accessible to devotees and visitors. Bateshwar is also home to India's second largest cattle, camel and horse show (second to the well-known Pushkar fair). This will happen early in November of each year and is worth a visit.

The real attraction of the Chambal Safari Lodge (next to the hammocks in the lodge itself) is of course the Chambal River and the Chambal National Sanctuary.

About 30 minutes drive from the lodge (on the country road) lies the Chambal River, which is more beautiful than many of the more famous siblings. This area is full of beautiful birds and wildlife viewing opportunities. With more than 300 species of birds (of which more than 80 species can be found in the Lodge connections themselves), both local and migratory and unique wild, including crocodiles, Gharials, Turtles, Gangetic Dolphins, etc.

It's a great place for anyone who wants to leave the Tiger reserves and do something unique in a relatively undiscovered part of India.
