Choosing the right dehumidifier for an Indian household

Living in India we all are aware of the high humidity levels we have to withstand in those summers and monsoons. We also face problems related to humidity like damage to walls due to the growth of moss and also damage to other assets due to high moisture. It also causes health issue as due to the prevailing humidity there is the growth of harmful bacteria, microbes and other viruses which cause illnesses like asthma. Because of this reason a compact dehumidifier is an essential investment in every Indian home. The role of these dehumidifiers is to pull in the excessive moisture from your house leaving behind clean, dry and fresh air.

The dehumidifier is a new concept for the people in India and is yet to be caught up with them. It is not as popular as a refrigerator or an air conditioner. This makes it difficult for people to buy a dehumidifier and usually end up being conned into buying products which are of no use to them as they are totally unaware about commercial dehumidifier manufacturers or what to look for when investing in one: 

There are basically two types of dehumidifiers:

1. Refrigerant or compressor dehumidifier

2. Dessicant dehumidifier

The working of a refrigerant dehumidifier is by drawing in the moist air with the help of its filters which is then passed over cold coils. Here the moist air collides with the cold coils to condense and form droplets which gather in a water tank. The air thus dried is blown back in the room. This is the ideal dehumidifier for Indian households.

In this type of dehumidifier, a material named desiccant is used to pull in the moisture from the air and is heated up release the humidity which gets collected in the form of water droplets. The dry air is then blown back into the room.

Apart from these two types of compressors, you will also have to check for the capacity of the dehumidifier. This can be measured in the following two ways:

Moisture removal capacity refers to the ability of the dehumidifier to remove the moisture from the atmosphere in a single day. It should be remembered that the capacity of the dehumidifier varies depending on the atmosphere or climatic conditions so whenever you choose to invest in a dehumidifier check for specifications which state the moisture removal capacity of the particular dehumidifier.

The water tank capacity is termed to the ability of the water collecting of the tank which comes with the dehumidifier. Usually, the capacity of the water tank is less than the moisture removal capacity of the dehumidifier. For e.g. if the moisture removal capacity of the dehumidifier is said to be 25 liters per day then the water tank capacity usually is not more than 8 liters. Which means one would need to empty the water tank many times a day.
