As Lack of Medical Services in Egypt 'World's Heaviest Woman' Looking Obesity Surgery in India
The world’s heaviest woman Eman Ahmed Abdelaty, the 36 year old Egyptian who weighed 500 kgs has successfully underwent an operation in Mumbai on March 7, 2017. Having underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at the Saifee Hospital, her recovery is fairly well. According to the Save Eman Cause that created a fund, “After ten days of the procedure her current weight is 358 kgs.”
This fundraiser has been set up to help Eman lead the life she deserves. The money is put in a separate account specifically for her treatment while she is in India. Currently, she has been put under a two-hourly liquid feeding regime beginning from 6 am to 12 pm. Her diet consisting of low sodium protein powder mixed with soya milk is also administered via a feeding tube. Eman’s total daily caloric intake is about 1800 calories and total daily protein intake is about 200 gm.
As per the doctors, given the fact Eman had a severe core pulmonale or right sided failure even before the obesity surgery in India, her treatment with diuretics and protein therapy continue but the levels of uric acid still remain a challenge. According to the medical team looking after her, “We do not see any major surgical intervention in the near future. She has extremely done well post obesity surgery in India but continues to remain on tube feeds due to difficulty in swallowing fluids post previously suffered stroke. Physiotherapy and stabilization of other medical as well as hormonal factors continue with the entire medical team trying to get her fit to fly her back safely to Egypt.”
Meanwhile, an Egyptian physician Dr. Sharif Hathoot has rebuffed claims that there was a lack of medical treatment available in Egypt for World’s Heaviest Woman and said that Eman’s family rejected an offer for free treatment locally. In an exclusive interview, he rebuked the claims made by the Indian physicians who have diagnosed Abdelaty with an incurable disease due to genetic defects as a reason for her massive weight gain over the years.
Hathoot asked, “The fact that there is no cure for her medical case in not accurate otherwise how did she lose 150 kgs so far? Actually, we offered her free medical treatment in the biggest and most prominent specialized medical center in al-Kasr al-Ayni that houses a team of experts specialized in treating obesity. But her sister refused for Eman to be treated in a public hospital saying she favoured sending her to India.” Further he said, “Whatever is been offered by the Indian doctors is no doubt available in Egypt.”
Doctors say they believe they have found the reason behind the cause of Eman’s obesity. A special gene study was done that focused on the samples from the patient which found the cause for her weight problem that was in the leptin receptor gene which made her feel hungry all the time. According to doctors, she is the only person in the world with this obesity causing gene defect.
