We live near the town of Tuscumbia, Alabama. I had heard about Helen Keller in my childhood during school but she really became more real to me after my mother and stepfather got married and we moved to Leighon, Alabama. I don't remember the firt time I went to Helen Keller's birth place in Tuscumbia, but I do remember how fascinated I was with it and how everything I had learned in school just came to life. To see where she lived, the house next door to her mother and dad's where Katie Sullivan stayed with her and helped her to start communicating and read all the interesting remarks there in the museum, it just really brought things home to me more. I have always loved anything about history anyway and this really thrilled me. I have been there at least three times since then and I always enjoy it when I go.
