       Architecture in total has two parts, one art, and the other, science. As an art, it provides an outlet for creative expression that leads society to look at their living spaces and the overall environment in different ways.      The global population is not only increasing but is also urbanizing at a rapid rate. As this trend is accelerating, the role of architecture in the design of sustainable living space will become critical.

Should You Focus on Math?

      Most of the people think that being an architect has something to do with math. But experts from some reputed colleges of architecture says, it does not – in fact, people who lack in math skills should not be kept away from pursuing their dreams of becoming a perfect architect just because they are not good in math. If you are that person, read Math and Architecture and let us know if you still think that math is going to be that one thing that stops you from becoming an architect. Basic math like Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division … that is all what is required for any individual. You could get creative and work some geometry and algebra into the mix, but you can generally avoid it if you want.

What About Sketching?

     Cannot draw? We are not sure that it is that big a deal nowadays – and it would seem that most graduating architecture students do not really know how to sketch.

Sketching is really important part, and it’s definitely something you should be working on … but it isn’t the most important.

Does Presentation Skills help?

     Presentation skills are far more important than anybody in school actually, realizes. Have you ever realized just how important presentation skills were; you would have supplemented your college curriculum with some classes on this subject. Luckily for some, this happens to be an area where one naturally excels. When it comes to standing up in front of a room of strangers, you get as nervous as the next person does, you just do not seem to let it get in the way. It also does not hurt that over the past few years, if you have given dozens upon dozens of presentations to people all around the country then you have become considerably more immune to the challenges of standing in front of a huge number of people and presenting. There are some simple things by which someone can do to put themselves in a position to give a great presentation.

So, presentation skills are incredibly important… but no, that isn’t it either.

So if it isn’t sketching or math, and it isn’t presentation skills, what could it possibly be? Exactly from where should enthusiastic future ‘wanna-be’ architects begin?

The answer is shockingly simple and straightforward. The very most important skill that someone who is interested in becoming an architect should develop is…looking the world around them and then being able to articulate why they like the things they like. Sounds pretty easy but is actually one of the hardest things a young designer can figure out… and it won’t enhance without time and effort, so why not get started on it now?

      The difference between someone doing well and someone doing great as an architect is not their design skills; it’s their ability to make a personal connection with the people who have hired them (clients), work through the problems by extrapolating the similar conditions, codifying that process, and then understanding why some solutions work and others don’t.

     This last one is frequently overlooked by our younger designers, maybe not out of negligence, but may be due to their experience levels. Being able to understand why you did something, always allowed you to duplicate your successes without having to replicate your solutions.

It’s pretty easy to understand that just because you like something, it doesn’t mean that everybody will – that requires knowledge and understanding.
