What happens to the soul after it leaves the body?

Life is not always easy. Everyone one day when the other is at the lowest. But even so, life is not a punishment. The fate you have in life was not predestined as a punishment for past lives. That's not how it works.

The soul returns [to death] to the God who gave it ”in the sense that only God who gave the soul - or life force - at first is able to return it after it comes out of man, meaning that any hope for that person for a future life is entirely dependent on God.

Nobody knows about the soul, what next after death? I have heard so many times that god takes the soul into the heaven or hell according to that soul's karma.
