How to keep your dog calm while grooming

If you want to keep your dog still and allow you to groom his coat without fuss, you first need to get him used to being treated this way. Starting with a puppy makes this easier, but it is not difficult to teach an older dog.
The trick is not to bribe him with treats every time you want to groom him, but to change his behavior and make grooming fun, easy, and intimate. So, treats are just one means to an end.
You need to start by petting your dog all over while he stands, sits, and lies down. When he allows you to handle him, reward him. Then start increasing the amount of time you handle him in the same area. Reward him only after 5 seconds, then 10 seconds, then 20 seconds. Then introduce your grooming tools and let him explore the items. Increase the time between treatments while using the grooming tools.
Eventually, you will have a dog that enjoys being groomed, and you can eventually phase out the treats.
Grooming should be done all year round. This will avoid messy areas and get your dog used to being groomed. You don't need to bathe him frequently. Bathing too often will strip his coat of natural oils.
