PVC Stabilizer Current Trends and Uses

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is not a thermally stable polymer and needs support of Thermal Stabilizers to protect itself from degrading due to high temperature processing. The additive used for this function is called PVC Stabilizer or PVC Heat Stabilizer. PVC is processed at High temperature up to 185 Dc and at such elevated temperatures it releases Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) and this starts the degradation of the polymer. In order to scavenge the liberated HCL, Certain additives are used in the PVC Compounding. These additives are called PVC Stabilizers, PVC Thermal Stabilizers or PVC Heat Stabilizers.

These PVC Stabilizers are of different metal base depending on the end application. The different stabilizers are: Lead Stabilizers, Calcium Zinc Stabilizers, Tin Stabilizers, Barium Cadmium Stabilizer, Barium Zinc Stabilizer, Potassium Zinc Stabilizer, Barium Cadmium Zinc Stabilizer etc. These stabilizers are in Solid as well as Liquid form as per the requirement.  To get the best results, optimization of the Stabilizer does is essential to establish as excess dose will increase the compound costing while less than required dose will give poor results and the PVC compound may have burning effect.  Ideally the quality of Stabilizer should be such that it gives the desired results at minimum possible dose.

The world is moving towards an Eco-Friendly products and in this process the raw materials by default has to be Non Toxic in nature.  Heavy Metal base stabilizers such as Lead & Cadmium are gradually being phased out in several countries. The alternate to these heavy metal grades such as Tin, Calcium, Zinc, Barium etc. are picking up very fast and all the stabilizer manufacturers are putting in efforts to improvise the performance ability of these nontoxic metal when put to use as Stabilizer.
