Most young baseball players dream of becoming the next Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani, but even the game’s greats had to start somewhere. If you want to give your child the best chance of one day playing with the stars, you have to show them Baseball Whiz’s new guide! By reading the guide, your child will learn how to better understand the strike zone and they'll pick up several drills they can do to improve their plate discipline. The guide also includes links to Baseball Whiz’s “Beginner Hitting Program”, a comprehensive course designed to boost hitting, increase power, and refine timing at the plate.

Understanding The Strike Zone

According to the guide, the first thing your child has to do if they want to become a better hitter is develop their understanding of the strike zone, which is the area between their elbows and knees where pitches are turned into hits. Baseball Whiz believes that having a strong feel for where this strike zone is located will enable them to choose better pitches to swing at.

“Understanding the strike zone in depth allows your child to make more informed choices,” explains Coach Whiz, author of the guide. “If they know what a decent pitch looks like, they’re less likely to go after poor ones, resulting in fewer strikeouts and more walks. This is a straightforward idea that can significantly improve their game.”

To develop this understanding of the strike zone, Baseball Whiz recommends that your child do drills that sharpen their patience and timing. For example, incorporating a tee that holds the ball at different heights forces them to concentrate on making clean contact. Hitting soft tosses from the side serves a similar purpose, but has the added challenge of making contact with a moving ball.

Improving Plate Discipline

Once strike zone understanding has been established, Baseball Whiz argues that your child needs to have strict plate discipline. This is the ability to not only wait for the right pitches but also control their bat speed and swing path when they go for pitches. One drill they suggest they try is attempting to hit markers or targets in the outfield either from a tee or a soft toss.

Customize Your Child's Training

Whatever drills your child decides to do, there are a few general things they need to remember:

1) Train Intelligently — Always go for quality over quantity. While getting lots of reps in is important, doing things purposefully with lots of consideration for technique is how they will start to see real improvements.

2) Implement Game-Like Situations — It's one thing to hit a ball from a stationary tee; it's another thing entirely to hit a ball traveling towards you quickly! Every child will develop at a different speed, but you must get them comfortable with the pressures of the game as soon as possible.

3) Learn From Previous At-Bats —Keeping a record of pitches your child missed versus pitches they hit is a good way to identify their strengths and weaknesses. By being aware of their tendencies, they'll be better equipped the next time they're at the plate.

“Knowing the strike zone and having good plate discipline makes you a better hitter because it allows you to be more picky, swinging at pitches you can handle and ignoring those you can’t,” says Coach Whiz. “This not only increases your chances of getting on base but also puts you in better counts where you’re more likely to get a pitch you can hit hard.”
