Therefore the health of people deteriorated with time. Toxins started to accumulate in the body and lead to common and serious health conditions. Some of them have clearly affected the reproductive system. In this article we shall see about Nabothian Cyst. A cyst which is present on the cervix is called a nabothian cyst. They are usually multiple. Nabothian cysts are usually benign. These usually occur in reproductive age. In the following text we shall discuss some more about nabothian cysts and its management.
Introduction
Nabothian cysts are also known as epithelial cysts or mucinous cysts. It is a common condition. These are generally seen at colposcopy examinations. These are usually present on the junction of squamocolumnar of the uterine cervix. They are usually filled with mucus. There are also cases when these cysts contain protein materials and neutrophil debris. Nabothian cysts are formed due to obstruction or blockage of the mucus glands of the cervix which leads to cysts from microscopic to a pea-like structure. Therefore they are also known as retention cyst as it contains the mucus trapped from the mucus glands. In Ayurveda, it can be correlated to the kapha vitiation and aam formation. Kapha is the main doshas that block the microchannels. Therefore the kapha dosha dominates in the nabothian cysts formation.
Causes of Nabothian Cysts
- Blockage of the cervical gland mouths usually as a result of healing of erosion (epidermization). This leads to swelling of the mucus secreting gland, which is known as nabothian cyst.
- Recurrent or prior condition of cervicitis.
- An injury can lead to nabothian cysts.
- After parturition the incidence of developing nabothian cysts increases.
- In Ayurveda, nabothian glands can be considered as the result of tridosha vitiation but kapha dosha particularly causes the conditions as kapha dosha blocks micro channels which secrete mucus that results in formation of the nabothian cysts. Size of the nabothian cysts depend on the mucus content trapped inside the cyst.
Symptoms
- Nabothian cysts are usually asymptomatic as they do not cause any discomfort and pain.
- Nabothian cysts rarely cause light pressure or fullness sensation in the vagina depending on the size of the cyst/s.
- Dyspareunia can be after or during intercourse.
- Vaginal discharge containing mucus and a little blood when the cysts bursts.
- The discharge can be smelly.
- In the symptomatic nabothian cysts, there is chronic pain in the pelvic region, irregular menses, obstruction of the cervical canal and heaviness in the vagina.
- There is the first case of prolapse in a nulliparous woman by a nabothian cyst.
Diagnostic Techniques
- Colposcopy
- Transvaginal sonography
- CT Scan is more efficient than sonography to consider the lesions.
- MRI helps in differentiating nabothian cysts from adenocarcinoma.
Treatment
- Usually there is no treatment protocol for the asymptomatic nabothian cysts.
- Antibiotic therapy can help in treating cervicitis induced or associated nabothian cysts.
- Excision : using scalpel the surgeon can remove the nabothian cysts.
- Electrocautery ablation : Electrical currents are passed through the cysts. The technique heats up the cysts and in due course destroys the cyst.
- Cryotherapy : the technique destroys the cyst by freezing. In this technique, liquid nitrogen freezes the nabothian cyst and hence destroys it.
Complications
- Hematometra
- Rectal compression
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Labour passage obstruction
- Infertility due the cervix obstruction
According to Ayurveda due to improper diet and deeds, kapha dosha vitiates, which leads to clogging of the microchannels which results in formation of nabothian cysts. There are various procedures which are used in ayurveda practice such as yoni prakshalana with triphala kwath and sphatika prakshalana. Uttar vasti is one of the main procedures that is performed to aid female reproductive disorders.
