Ask some alumni of an eminent English medium school in Kolkata about their school lives. You will see a million-dollar smile on their faces and gleam in their eyes. The school life is always so special. If Kolkata’s English-medium schools could tell their stories, they would become the best sellers.

How’s the Everyday Life of A Student of An English Medium School?

Be it in an interview round or a session of group discussion, folks from English medium schools always leave an impression. Schools have a lot to contribute to the success stories of students.

1.     Where discipline is the big D: English medium schools and convent schools are famous for their adherence to discipline. Since corporal punishments in schools are illegal in India, schools come up with innovative methods.

Many educationists and some members of the intelligentsia are of the opinion that children are capable of self-rectification. Truly so. However, there must be some kind of a check. The ultimate objective of punishments in schools is to generate a feeling of repentance in students.

Some schools have implemented affirmative disciplinary methods. Students choose the type of punishment for themselves. Methods of punishments are quite interesting. For example, students have to take down notes for some fellow classmate, etc.

2.     Where English is the mother tongue: To learn a language by heart, you should be able to speak like a native. Here lies the beauty of an English-medium school. Teachers ensure that students converse only in English during their stay in schools.

Teachers arrange group discussions in classrooms. Schools which dedicate themselves solely for the mental and physical upliftments of students, implement modern methods of pedagogy. Accordingly, the teachers cut down on TTT or Teacher Talking Time and prolong the STT or Student Talking Time.

Teachers don’t encourage answers in ‘YES’ or ‘No’. They come up with questions that need students to elaborate on the topic in order to make themselves clear.

3.     Where empathy is the norm: Empathetic teachers are the best mentors. Empathetic teachers are valuable assets to schools. To understand it better, let’s consider this example.

Case study: A group discussion is being held in a classroom. A student has framed a sentence, incorrectly. Teacher A says “Oh, this is not correct.” Whereas, an empathetic teacher would say “It’s a good try but you can say it in this way...”

English medium schools keep keen eyes on appointing empathetic teachers. Unlike vernacular schools, English medium schools have the extra responsibility of instilling the skill of spoken English. Hence, teachers should be patient with students.

Parents queue up for enrolling their children at the best schools in Kolkata. They put immense hope on these institutions. Top-ranked schools always strive to exceed parents’ expectations.

Their motto is to prepare students for the future.
