Sensitive teethes are a very common dental problem. However, the sharp sensations and discomfort caused by tooth sensitivity can often be hard to ignore.

In most cases, sensitive teeth are a result of tooth cavities that expose the roots and tender nerve endings, worn-out tooth enamel, and oral health issues. However, tooth discomfort can also be attributed to other factors like cracked or chipped tooth, gum recession, gum diseases, broken filling, dental procedures, gastrointestinal problems that cause acid reflux, etc.

If you’re bothered by teeth sensitivity issues, you’re probably ready to read up on various sensitivity treatments that are available to get you out of the discomfort zone.

Common treatment options

Depending on the underlying cause, the following sensitivity treatment options are available to the patients:

1.   Desensitizing toothpaste- Most desensitizing toothpaste brands use active ingredients like potassium nitrate which helps in soothing the exposed nerve outlets. Several applications of a good quality desensitizing toothpaste can help block the nerve sensations that is commonly associated with sensitive teeth.

2.   Fluoride application- Dentists may consider treating certain cases of teeth sensitivity by applying fluoride. This is a common approach to sensitivity treatment for cases with worn out or thin enamel. Home-based prescriptions for fluoride applications are also given.

3.   Bonding- In some cases, it is necessary to cover the exposed root surfaces by a bonding resin that helps in desensitizing the area.

4.   Gum grafts- In cases where there is a loss of gum tissue, gum grafting techniques are applied. This is a common approach in severe cases of gum recession which leaves the dentin part of the teeth exposed, causing sensitivity issues.  A small portion of the gum, extracted from other areas of your mouth is grafted surgically on the affected site.

5.   Root canal treatment- In the cases of short sharp sensations and extreme root rotting, some of the aforementioned treatments may not be effective. Dentists work on carrying out a root canal procedure which treats the problems in the tooth’s core. A root canal is one of the most successful techniques for long term elimination of teeth sensitivity.

Prevention is better than cure

While all of the aforementioned options are considered effective for sensitivity treatment and are commonly used by dentists all over the globe, there is no better solution than prevention. Good oral care including brushing the teeth twice, using a soft bristle brush, fluoride toothpaste, etc are recommended. Intermittent use of a good sensitivity toothpaste is a good way to soothe your exposed gums and nerves.

Finally, healthy eating habits like limiting the quantity of acidic food, alcohol, sweets, citrus fruits, etc will help keep your enamel intact and work as a natural sensitivity treatment technique.
