If you're looking to get your online store off the ground, you may find that you have difficulty getting people to stop by. An e-commerce SEO agency can help put you on the map on dramatic fashion, but there are somethings you can do yourself. Start with selecting your target market and the right keywords to go with that market.

Niche Keywords and Marketing

If you make something or provide a service that several national and international corporations offer, you're not going to be able to make much headway with your own e-commerce website unless you have a specific niche. "Everyone" is not a niche. "Used cars" is also not a niche keyword.

The Right Market

You need to find a market that is underserved and the keywords to go with that market. You can do better if you focus on specific products you sell or services you offer. If you have a physical location, you can increase your ranking for people looking for your products and services in your area. "Used cars in Chicago" is a lot easier to rank highly for, though it will still be difficult.

The Right Keywords

Once you know your target market and what keywords you think you want to rank for, use a keyword finder tool (available at Google Ads for free) and learn what people are really looking for. You might think that people are looking for "Angora seat covers," but no one actually uses that term. Instead, they look for "sheepskin seat covers" or "soft car seat covers." You want to choose keywords that people are looking for and that have only a few websites servicing them. Don't leave that to chance. Do the research and you'll be richly rewarded.

Go for Long Keywords

Another way to get ahead of the game is to look at keywords that are 4 or 5 words long. These long tail keywords are typically less served and provide the greatest ROI for your time. As time goes on and you continue to target those longer keywords, you may find your site ranking for shorter versions too. While an e-commerce SEO agency can provide you with a more detailed and effective SEO plan, it's always nice to have a starting point that you can work on. Then when you can get professional help, you'll be on your way to knocking it out of the SEO park!
